This is a one year contract appointment position with the possibility of additional year contract appointment extensions. Per the University of California (UC) recruitment policy, because this position has undergone competitive recruitment, this position can be converted to career status any time after hire, as conversion meets criteria set by UC recruitment policy and the needs of the Office of Information Technology department.
The Office of Information Technology (OIT) provides enterprise class services to the staff, faculty, and students of UC Irvine. The Enterprise Unix Services (EUS) team within OIT supports critical campus services that use the Linux operating system and associated open source and custom-built applications.
Under the direction of the Enterprise Unix Services (EUS) Manager in the University of California, Irvine's Office of Information Technology department, the Systems Architect position is responsible for providing management of AWS and Linux servers, for participating in project teams as a subject matter expert, for performing security assessments, implementing security controls, and for developing and maintaining thorough documentation. The position requires expert system administration abilities with a strong emphasis on migrating Red Hat version 6 linux distributions (i.e. Red Hat, CentOS, Oracle Linux, Amazon Linux 1) to Red Hat version 7 Linux distributions. Project management skills are required to ensure project completion before scheduled version end-of-life. You will: create and lead detailed project implementation plans through all phases of projects, act as the lead in communicating status on projects to stakeholders and management, collaborate with other groups and vendors to acquire needed resources for project success. In conjunction with OIT Project Managers, set realistic expectations with clients and keep them informed of the implementation activities on project tasks. Candidates must have proficient time management skills to work in a dynamic operations environment with varying priorities and schedule demands. Excellent communications skills are required for collaboration with technical and non-technical individuals of the university.
5+ years of experience operating large scale Linux environments.
3+ years of experience developing infrastructure solutions and specifying system requirements.
Five (5) to ten (10) years relevant experience with BA/BS in related field, or three (3) to five (5) years relevant experience with MA/MS in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience OR equivalent experience.
General knowledge of other areas of IT. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
Demonstrated advanced knowledge, skills and abilities associated with system problem identification and resolution. Experience with design, configuration, operation, repair, and tuning of technology systems.
Experience leading a team of IT professionals.
Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing most complex server-based software.
Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
Experience installing, configuring, optimizing and maintaining Apache Web services
Basic knowledge of how to apply technologies and systems to meet business needs.
Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
Experience installing, configuring, optimizing and maintaining Apache Tomcat.
Demonstrated skills associated with adapting equipment and technology to serve user needs. Demonstrated comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users and dependent / related functions.
Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
Experience with network technologies, especially DNS, VLANs, firewalls, and load balancers
Must pass a background check.
Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance.
Advanced experience writing and editing the most complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration.. Understanding of ITIL framework. Familiarity with installation, configuration, monitoring and optimization of Database environments.
Experience developing cloud technologies and services, especially AWS. Experience programming in Python or Go. Experience with configuration management tools, especially Terraform and Ansible
