The Institute of Marine Sciences [https://ims.ucsc.edu/] at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), working in conjunction with the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service Southwest Fisheries Science Center (NOAA Fisheries), invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Scholar, under the direction of Dr. Peter Dudley. The postdoctoral scholar will develop and explore novel techniques to census spawning threatened green sturgeon and improve methods for continuing a green sturgeon population estimate. The postdoctoral scholar will also have the opportunity to investigate the effects of bycatch on green sturgeon and explore green sturgeon spawning habitat use. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a threatened species in a system of national importance. The work is both fundamental and applied and the applications of this work will inform official NOAA policy and have direct effect on management issues on the system. Historically, the Southwest Fisheries Science Center has conducted a multiyear survey of spawning green sturgeon in the Sacramento River using DIDSON and estimated local abundances using statistical tools. The candidate will oversee and improve this effort by exploring new methods using consumer grade side-scan sonar combined with N-Mixture models to estimate green sturgeon abundance. The candidate will also be encouraged to explore other statistical methods for estimating the yearly spawning population and the total population.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will work under the supervision and direction of Dr. Peter Dudley (UCSC) and will collaborate with other NOAA Fisheries Scientists and UCSC researchers. The position will be based at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center (https://swfsc.noaa.gov/) in Santa Cruz, CA.

Applicants with expertise in any of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:

Experience with overseeing the logistics of ecological field work
Experience conducting animal censuses
Experience in statistical modeling
Experience in programing languages commonly used for statistical modeling (R, or others)
Demonstrated record of scientific publishing and oral presentation

The Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) is an organized research unit whose mission is to increase knowledge of the world's oceans and inhabitants to better understand their economic importance and the impact people have on them. Through this effort, IMS maintains the responsibility to encourage, develop, and support marine research and education and does this by providing research opportunities, resources, facilities, and support for scientists within the institute and with other marine research institutions.

As part of its mission's efforts, IMS launched the Fisheries Collaborative Program (FCP) to help fosters research collaborations between NOAA scientists, UCSC faculty, IMS researchers, and students. The FCP's research activities include field and laboratory experiments, modeling, and computational studies and they involve marine and freshwater species and habitats where comprehensive studies are being conducted on the ecology and life history of Pacific salmonids and other fishes. The FCP serves to support and resource managers (e.g., Pacific Fisheries Management Council), fisheries, and resource science in general.

ACADEMIC TITLE
Postdoctoral Scholar

SALARY
Commensurate with qualifications and experience, minimum annual salary $60,000. Minimum annual salary rates are made based on the individual's Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in the field of fisheries biology/management, natural resources management, ecology, or other related field of study.

POSITION AVAILABLE
As soon as possible after initial review of the applications. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment.

MAXIMUM DURATION OF SERVICE IN A POSTDOCTORAL TITLE
Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; the initial appointment is for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment will be contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individual's postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution. Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth year.
