Genomics Institute: Research Scientist (Open until filled. Apply by 5/11/2020)
Biomedical research and precision medicine require large to enormous sample sizes to make statistically significant inferences. As a result, genomic and biomedical datasets are exploding in complexity and sheer scale. Economics and privacy considerations are forcing the abandonment of the download model in which every center keeps an independent copy of the data - it is simply too expensive. Instead, the paradigm of bringing the research to the data is taking over. In this model, compute and data are colocalized within a accessible cloud environment in which researchers from many institutions can perform analysis (see for example: https://medium.com/@benedictpaten/a-data-biosphere-for-biomedical-research-d212bbfae95d). The UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute is on the vanguard of this revolution, with key development roles in major projects that are building biomedical cloud infrastructure, including the UCSC Genome Browser, the Human Cell Atlas Data Coordination Platform, Dockstore, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute's BioData Catalyst, the National Human Genome Research Institute's AnVIL project, and the umbrella Global Alliance for Genomics and Health.
The UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute invites applications for a Research Scientist. Under the supervision of Benedict Paten, the Research Scientist will lead the Computational Genomics Platform (CGP), a group within UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute of a substantial and diverse engineering team of data analysts and software engineers. The CGP is leading efforts in all of the above-mentioned projects. We seek a self-motivated, creative scientist experienced in genomic and biomedical data management and analysis. The candidate should have extensive programming experience and management experience in the biomedical informatics domain, and a compelling vision to develop cloud-based solutions for biomedical data science.
The applicant will be expected to apply for and serve as principal investigator on grants, contracts, and private external funding, including helping to manage a substantial existing portfolio of grants. The applicant will be expected to publish in scientific journals, present findings at scientific meetings, and foster collaborations that promote the goals of the CGP. The successful candidate will be highly articulate and have demonstrated ability to collaborate with scientists, software engineers, and students in developing novel computational resources, open source projects, and community standards development.
Applicants with experience in the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply: Experience in commercial and private clouds; and/or experience working in UNIX or Linux environments with large cloud deployments, large databases, and large code bases.
Our exceptional collegiality and interdisciplinary collaborations make UCSC an excellent environment for an innovative scientist who can benefit from and contribute to the rapid growth in the sciences and engineering at UCSC.
