Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The Sr. Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for scientific and administrative activities of laboratory. Requires extensive knowledge of overall objectives and interests of lab research. Opportunity to conduct own research project.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Develops designs and manages substantial research projects. Coordinates own objectives and those of laboratory team members. Assists the lab PI towards supervising data collection and verification, based on specialized skill and knowledge. Implements new protocols, and oversees assay validations in conjunction with PI. Also responsible for overall operational elements of the lab (as it relates to Dept., School, and Institution) functioning as the representative of the PI. Assists the lab PI towards managing staff, including recommendations for hiring, terminating, and performance appraisals. Acts as project manager for lab renovations, equipment purchases, etc. This position requires excellent communication and problem solving-skills, social and leadership skills, and a willingness to oversee the management of a large animal colony.
Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials. Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace. Prepares sterile media, solutions, reagents, and stains following standard formulas and procedures. Willingness to work with animals a must.
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field
Three (3) years related experience.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *
Master’s degree in biological sciences preferred.
Five (5) years experience in a scientific laboratory.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proficiency in mainstream software for biomedical research (e.g., Microsoft office (text, spreadsheet, presentations); image processing/analysis software; ordering from online sources; animal and chemical databases).
Proficiency in accessing science- and research-related databases. Will be responsible for computer data back-ups and storage.
Ability to work in a standing position for extended periods of time; ability to move between buildings on campus.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
