Mississippi State University is looking for a self-motivated and well-organized Research Assistant Professor with strong background in geoscience, remote sensing, hydrology, and agriculture water management for the Geosystems Research Institute (GRI). The selected candidate will be responsible for conducting research tasks in active GRI projects and proactively securing funds for GRI mission areas. The candidate is expected to work closely on the applications of remote sensing techniques for key hydrological and agricultural variables at both global- and local-scales, including soil moisture, evapotranspiration, and precipitation. Given the existing projects, the candidate will collaborate with faculty and researchers at GRI, as well as faculty from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the Department of Geosciences, and the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences.
* develop improved techniques and workflows for the geospatial research projects, primarily focusing on the agriculture water management and crop yield prediction; * develop data sharing and management workflows for publishing matured products; * lead research efforts on a range of remote sensing and hydrology related projects, including implementation and development of algorithms, big data analysis, numerical modeling and data assimilation; * collaborate with USDA and academic researchers to improve the spatial-temporal characterization of key environmental variables (e.g., soil moisture, evapotranspiration, precipitation) in support of both GRI and USDA's mission areas; * prepare and publish papers and reports in peer-reviewed journals; * present research achievements and updates at international conferences and workshops.
* a Ph.D. in geography, environmental engineering, remote sensing, hydrology, or a closely related field and must have a minimum of three-year post-doctoral research experience; * extensive experience with geospatial big data (e.g., satellite remote sensing data, ground collected data) on the applications of hydrology and agriculture; * knowledge of land-atmosphere interactions, numerical modelling, data assimilation, remote sensing, hydrological processes, and agriculture water management; * experience with remote sensing signal processing and analysis techniques; * extensive experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS), data science programming (e.g., Matlab, Python), Unix command line, and geoscience data management; * a competitive publication record in peer-reviewed journals; and * strong written and oral communication skills.
* demonstrated ability to work within multi-disciplinary teams involving different institutions and investigators; * using machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms for applications.
