Under the supervision of the Costume Studio Manager, the Costume Studio Technician will assist in the execution of costume construction for the College of Performing Arts (COPA). This person will work closely with the Costume Studio Management, designers, faculty, staff and students to perform a variety of tasks associated with the construction and maintenance of costumes for CoPA productions. This position may also support backstage wardrobe operations.
Undergraduate degree in Technical Theatre or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of work experience, training and/or education may be considered.
Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in costume technology; hand stitching, machine sewing techniques.
Experience with tools and equipment needed for costume construction and maintenance.
Ability to operate with skill a variety of sewing machines including but not limited to; domestic straight and zig-zag machines, and serger.
Ability to prioritize tasks when faced with interruptions, distraction and fluctuating workloads and to carry out duties in a timely manner.
Strong analytical and organizational skills.
Ability to effectively communication both orally and in writing.
Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with diverse groups of individuals at all organizational levels.
Basic craft and millinery skills.
Basic pattern drafting skills.
Basic knowledge of costume and fashion history.
Basic knowledge of fabrics types and their uses for stage.
Ability to perform basic calculations for fabric measurements and costume fittings.
Ability to operate single needle industrial machine.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office software (e.g. Excel, Word), and ability to work with an online scheduling system.
Work schedules change from project to project, requiring flexibility to facilitate productions including nights, weekends, and occasionally holidays. The work location varies depending on Production Department work assignments.
