Essential Job Duties:
The NC State University Plants for Human health Institute (PHHI) is a established Institute located on the NC Research Campus in Kannapolis, NC. The NC Research Campus was created to have all aspects of human health and nutrition in one place complimented by multiple state and private entities providing the academic and research resources. The PHHI currently houses researchers and staff from various departments including Horticulture Science, Food Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences, Plant Biology, NC State Extension, Genetics, Agriculture and Resource Economics, and NCARS.
Through the PHHI, a postdoctoral research scholar position is available and in need of a researcher to conduct original research on postharvest attributes of blueberries, which includes (but is not limited to) cell wall analysis; enzyme activity; and microstructural changes in addition to changes in firmness, color, and nutrients. Relative to this original research, the postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for generating peer-reviewed publications and give presentations on the research to colleagues and at scientific meetings.
This position will help with daily supervision of a graduate student and with coordination of laboratory efforts on the research project both within the laboratory and with other labs involved in the project.
The postdoc will meet frequently with Dr. Penelope Perkins-Veazie to discuss best practices in grant writing, manuscript preparation, and mentoring.
Funding for this position is currently available for up to two (2) years.
Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.
Relevant Ph.D. is required and at least two (2) years of experience in the plant sciences (such as areas of food chemistry and field horticultural production).
Ability to communicate effectively, including: scientific writing, oral presentations or outreach activities.
Knowledge of statistical analytical methods (including ANOVA, regression, and mean separation.
*Experience in supervision of undergraduate students, graduate students, or technical staff.
Ability to effectively communicate methodology and develop and adapt protocols.
At least two (2) years experience with horticultural crops is preferred.
Preferred skills include expertise in chemistry laboratory analyses involving biological/food materials, production and management of horticultural crops, postharvest handling and processing of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Training in cell wall analysis or genetics is desired.
