The Department of Surgery encompasses a wide variety of surgical specialties. These include bariatric surgery, burn surgery, colorectal surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, endocrine surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, transplant surgery, trauma, acute care and surgical critical care surgery, vascular surgery, and oncologic surgery. The department's extensive surgical expertise, in combination with ongoing teaching and research activities, provide ample resources and advanced surgical techniques for patient care.

Responsibilities Under the supervision of a surgeon within the Department of Surgery in the Divisions of Foregut, Metabolic & General Surgery, as well as Colorectal Surgery, the Physician Assistant (PA) provides diagnostic, therapeutic, surgical and preventative care. The PA responsibilities include managing patients in the office, hospital, Emergency Department and perioperative setting. The PA duties are to perform a variety of job coordination and navigation necessary for preoperative and postoperative surgeries, admissions, discharge, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up care and outcome evaluation. Participate in performance improvement, research and educational activities. The PA may be required to First Assist in the Operating Room or perform other department specific procedures as identified by the list available in the Medical Staff Office.
This role provides high quality, efficient, team-based patient focused care. Patient management decisions will be independent where appropriate after assessment of the patient and interdependent with consultation with an attending or other member of the team. The PA will assist the surgeons in the global management of patient care in all peri-operative settings and by virtue of his/her experience and competency in the role, provides a high level of clinical and operational expertise and may function as a mentor to other healthcare providers including nurses, residents and other ancillary staff.
California State Physician Assistant License, issued by Physician Assistant Board under Medical Board of California by date of hire
National certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) within 3 months of hire
Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program
CITI Certification prior to any involvement in Clinical Research
DEA Registration Number required
ACLS & BLS within 60 days of hire
Must have a Nat'l Provider Identifier (NPI), or obtain an NPI, prior to employment start date and meet current Medicare requirements for billing
Minimum two (2) years surgical experience in the last five (5) years as a physician assistant
Judgement skills to effectively meet the needs of patients
Self-direction and organizational skills to function in an independent role
Ability to apply relevant theories and concepts to clinical practice
Ability to work flexible hours
Ability to cope with personal stress experienced by team members, other professionals, and caretakers
Able to lift 25 pounds, see well enough to read gauges and identify injuries
May be required to have experience and competency in performing specific tasks required by the surgical department
This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
