Department of Bioengineering
Stanford Bioengineering is a dynamic and rapidly growing department within the School of Engineering and School of Medicine and is seeking a part-time Life Science Research Professional to join our team exploring and developing a wide variety of tissue engineering technologies that could, one day, improve the lives of children living with congenital heart disease. Your work will focus primarily on providing logistical and technical support in building and maintaining a cell manufacturing pipeline that will fuel our cardiac 3D bioprinting efforts. You will contribute to several ongoing projects in deriving and printing functional and vascularized heart tissues. If you have strong experience in mammalian and stem cell culture, a knack for handling logistics, and a desire to work independently and collaboratively with others, then join us in 3D printing the medical cures of the future!
Your responsibilities include:
Contribute to projects investigating the 3D bioprinting of therapeutic-scale heart tissues
Using experience in mammalian cell culture, assist in the development and maintenance of a large-scale cell derivation pipeline
Must keep an accurate laboratory notebook for all studies
Support the planning and performance of laboratory experiments
Offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaboration with graduate, post-doctoral students and laboratory staff
Make recommendations on the research design and direction
May also be required to recommend changes in protocols to prevent reoccurrence of problems
Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and related research
Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents, including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
Help with general lab maintenance as needed; maintain lab stock, manage inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.
Help orient and train new staff and/or students.
Flexibility with other tasks as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in related scientific or engineering field.
2-plus years experience in mammalian cell culture, preferably stem cell and organoid culture. Experience in immunofluorescence, qPCR, and confocal imaging is desirable. A demonstrated passion for 3D printing and tinkering is preferred, but not necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience with mammalian cell culture and sterile BL-2 laboratory practices
Assist in interfacing with safety departments: occupational health, lab inspection, chemical inventory, controlled substances
Demonstrate aptitude in foresight, planning, and ability to organize as required by research
General understanding of scientific principles
General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications
Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance
Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work
May require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens
Requires work in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research
Position may at times require the employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present
Employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator
May require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs
Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrates the ability to work well with Stanford colleagues and clients and with external organizations
