The Ball State Department of Theatre and Dance is growing and changing. We offer eight diverse curricular options that develop and nurture each student’s creativity, curiosity, and collaborative skills. We currently serve over 500 majors in the department. The bachelor of arts/bachelor of science (BA/BS) in theatre offers several different curricular programs including the directing and stage management options. This curricular option is an undergraduate-only, pre-professional training program within a liberal arts education. The program is rooted in experiential learning allowing you numerous opportunities to get hands-on experience throughout our dynamic and diverse production season from the moment you arrive on campus. You will be exposed to diverse concepts and worldviews while honing your collaborative, artistic, and managerial skills on a variety of plays, musicals, dance pieces, and new works.
The production stage manager position facilitates as both the primary teacher to all the stage management students while also serving as the facilitator, coordinator, collaborative visionary, and organizational guru of the Department’s active and robust twenty show season. As a professional staff member at Ball State University, you will have access to robust programming and institutional resources that help our employees develop as teachers, creative artists, and scholars.
Position Function: Responsibilities include organizing and facilitating all operational and organizational aspects of a twenty show season in both theatre and dance; coordinating production calendar including dress and technical rehearsals, due dates affiliated with all design areas, and performance scheduling; ensuring that Department is adhering to all guidelines and rules as set forth by the Actor’s Equity Association (AEA); coordinating and scheduling theatrical venues, rehearsal spaces, and classrooms within theatre and dance; working with guest artists to coordinate residencies; mentoring and coaching all student stage managers within the production season; co-chairing the Department’s season selection committee; and coordinating the Department’s student practicum program for all freshmen. Teaching responsibilities will include Stage Management, Advanced Stage Management, Theatre Practicum, and other theatre courses as needed.
Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years of experience as a stage manager on Broadway, major Regional Theatre, or Equity touring venues OR Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years of experience as a production manager or production stage manager at a comparable educational institution. The ability to serve as a recruiter and advocate in the areas of stage management and directing. Excellent communication and organizational skills. Ability to work collegially within a liberal-arts setting.

Preferred qualifications: Five years of experience as a professional stage manager on Broadway, major Regional Theatre, or Equity touring venues. An active or past member of the Actor’s Equity Association (AEA). 3 years of teaching experience at the university/college level, gained concurrently or at any time.
