Assists Chief of Public Safety by providing supervision of Public Safety staff while performing additional duties that provide for a safe campus environment. Act as interim Chief of Public Safety when needed.
Assists other Public Safety staff on duty by supervising daily work details, advising, counseling, training and relaying information from Chief of Public Safety. Shall be responsible for the day to day operations of the Department of Public Safety. Maintains security of campus buildings, property, students and visitors by circulation and surveying assigned area(s). Maintains communication with Chief about staff and community. Maintains communications with resident life staff for the benefit of the community as a whole. Responds to requests for assistance from the Siena community. Assist the Chief with campus investigations. Responsible for the payroll function of the Department of Public Safety. Shall maintain a good working relationship with outside emergency response agencies. Will provide this service in the absence of the Chief. Assists and backs up resident life staff when needed. Completes reports, logs, and documentation as directed, responsible for accurate and timely report approval processes. Responsible for patrol and special event public safety scheduling. Makes sure shifts are covered. Responsible for calling to ensure schedule is covered. Responds to requests for assistance in emergencies, maintains contact with switchboard, and directs emergency response, if necessary. Assumes control of incident and directs communications with on campus and off campus authorities if necessary. Calls in Public Safety staff as needed to handle the situation. Ensures accurate reporting per department procedures. Responsible for assisting Chief and/or implementing preventative programming. Responsible for community safety awareness program. Responsible for key inventory. Responsible for equipment management. Responsible for overseeing the Cadet/Internship/Volunteer programs. Responsible to attend judicial-board hearings and court when requested to do so. Assist with the training of new staff members and the FTO program. Shall be the final decision as to the towing of a vehicle from the Siena Heights property in the absence of the Chief. Will assist with staff meetings. Assist Chief with updating and enforcing department procedures. Shares the responsibility of enforcing the Department of Public Safety’s policies and procedures by informing the Chief of any violations. Will issue verbal and/or written warnings as needed and communicate with the director concerning such. Other duties within scope of Department’s responsibilities as defined by Chief of Public Safety.
High school graduate or equivalent. Prefer two years of post-secondary education and/or prior management or supervisory experience. Experience in law enforcement, security or related field desirable. Must be knowledgeable about university public safety policy and procedures, be able to respond to changing priorities, and direct the work of others. Must be knowledgeable about Clery, Title IX, VAWA, State of Michigan, City of Adrian and applicable Federal laws pertaining to higher education. Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing, with others. Ability to keep calm in emergencies or conditions where others are agitated. First aid, AED and CPR certified. Must be able to take control of volatile situations. Fire safety certified.
