The Veterans' Outreach Specialist primary responsibility is to make connections with all of the agencies in the six county areas that provide services to veterans and adult learners and will work one on one with adult learners, with a primary focus on veterans and veterans' dependents who want to return to school. S/he will take the student from the point of intake through all that needs to be done (Admissions, Financial Aid, Veterans' benefits) to support the student in achieving their academic and/or vocational goals. S/he will coordinate and schedule workshops, act as a liaison regarding adult and veterans' issues between students, faculty, and administrators, refer veteran students to external organizations and agencies, coordinate program evaluation, and prepare reports. S/he will participate in college activities aimed at improving the campus climate for adult and veteran students.
Set up appointments, presentations, and community outreach with agencies in our six county area who work with veterans to promote our educational opportunities.
Develop working relationships with each of these agencies in order to reach a maximum number of veterans who want to return to school.
Serve as a veteran student advocate and as subject matter expert for veterans' benefits, needs and concerns.
Meet each student in an initial intake interview and to assist the student in developing his/her individual success plan.
Work with the Financial Aid Office to collaborate on certifying student's enrollment status for VA benefits and to determine other appropriate VA educational program opportunities and to provide the necessary forms.
Set up a series of meetings/connections during the semester to review student progress and to make whatever modifications are necessary.
Network with the Veteran Student Success Team to insure that the services to students are seamless and to provide technical assistance and information to students, staff, faculty and administrators regarding veterans' barriers to enrollment, retention and completion.
Collaborate with the college marketing, advertising and communications staff to develop promotional material for outreach to the community and to prospective student veterans.
Research and review records for changes in status so that appropriate outreach and support can be provided; schedule appointments for students with counselors and other support staff as needed.
Prepare and transmit correspondence for students, verifying VA eligibility, student status and other information, respond to requests from other educational institutions and agencies involving the verification of student status and records. Ensure that proper releases are on file to safeguard student privacy.
Maintain student VA records in accordance with VA regulations and audit records to assure accuracy.
Collect, compile, verify and record information for the generation of reports. Identify data needs for VA and/or SUNY purposes, request queries to be designed for data collection purposes, and disseminate data as requested.
Other duties as assigned.
Master's Degree preferred, Bachelor's Degree is required.
A minimum of three years' experience in outreach, recruitment, adult education, teaching, human or student services, or combination of areas required. Experience navigating the system of Veterans' benefits related to education.
Good verbal and written skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and strong computer skills are required. Must be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity.
This is a part-time (19.5 hours/week), temporary, grant-funded, twelve-month position. Evening and weekend hours may be required. Must have reliable transportation.
