This position is located at the OHSU Marquam Hill campus in Portland, Oregon. The work schedule will be set by the supervising faculty, dictated by lab activities including research and planned experiments and tests. A flexible schedule will be very likely, with occasional weekend work.
The Laboratory Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Andrea DeBarber, oversees a variety of activities at OHSU, including research projects, as well as provision of bioanalytical services under CAP/CLIA and GCLP regulations. The PI is looking for a laboratory manager that will aid PI in overseeing laboratory activities, including providing bioanalytical services in a regulated environment. The individual in this position will also assist PI in planning and conducting one or more phases of research projects, including a pilot study to screen newborn dried blood spots for the rare neurodegenerative genetic disorder cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX), with the ultimate goal to support newborn screening for this treatable disorder.
The individual hired for this position will be responsible for overseeing bioanalytical sample testing performed by the laboratory, including evaluating biological specimens for suitability for laboratory testing, carrying out sample accessioning and sample processing, conducting and/or monitoring the completion of testing and reviewing test results. The individual will also be responsible for overseeing clinical laboratory QA activities including regulatory compliance (CP/CLIA) and lab proficiency testing program participation.
Duties will also include operating and monitoring the performance of instrumentation used for bioanalytical testing, including HPLC-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography (GC)-MS systems. Responsibilities include performing necessary preventative maintenance, assessing satisfactory equipment function, initiating and recording corrective actions when equipment is malfunctioning, and working with equipment manufacturer/vendor to identify and correct problems. Responsibilities also include development and validation of LC-MS/MS testing methodology in compliance with regulatory guidelines.
Masters Degree with major courses in relevant field and 3 years of relevant experience; OR Bachelor's Degree with major courses in field of research and 5 years of relevant experience
Experience overseeing bioanalytical sample testing, ideally in a regulated environment
Ability to operate and monitor the performance of LC-MS/MS instrumentation
Ability to perform development and validation of LC-MS/MS testing methods
Ability to work in an environment with exposure to human body fluid
Strong organizational, multi-tasking and record keeping skills
Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
High attention to detail and accuracy
Ability to work independently and as a team member in a diverse multi-disciplinary environment
Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time at a lab bench and in front of a computer
Fine motor dexterity
Masters Degree in biology, chemistry, animal science or related area
Familiarity with high-throughput sample processing and analysis (96-well plate format)
Experience overseeing clinical laboratory QA activities and proficiency testing program participation
Experience with operating SCIEX LC-MS/MS instrumentation and software (Analyst, MultiQuant)
