The Laboratory Technician, under general supervision, (1) is the primary point of contact for customers, (2) cleans and maintains laboratory equipment, (3) conducts and keeps a lab notebook detailing DNA isolation and library preparation for Sanger and Illumina sequencing, including meta-barcoding and restriction-site-associated DNA population genomic library preparations, (4) conducts Sanger sequencing, (5) organizes and trains undergraduate laboratory volunteers, and (6) assists laboratory coordinator as requested.
Organize, direct and oversee Core lab projects.
Document and file any associated sample documentation.
Receive, verify and catalog samples.
Extract genetic material from samples using HotShot, BioRad and Qjagen protocols. Program thermal profiles for Eppendorf and BioRad thermocyclers.
Perform polymerase chain reaction amplificiation, Ampure bead clean-ups, Gel Electrophoresis, DNA precipitation, DNA isolation, ddRAD library preparation, meta-barcoding library preparation.
Prepare necessary reagents and solutions.
Calibrate, maintain and operate instruments/equipment.
Adhere to lab procedures and protocols to ensure quality.
Monitor the availability of lab supplies.
Assist in all other laboratory assignments and projects.
Organize, store and interpret NGS data.
Contact, schedule and organize undergraduate volunteers.
Instruct volunteers on all necessary protocols and procedures.
Ensure that all volunteers follow essential lab safety protocols.
Handle general maintenance and upkeep of the lab.
Interact with students and other laboratory members and assist them with their work as directed by the supervisor.
Perform other duties as assigned.
One (1) year of related experience in next-generation sequencing.
Additional education may be considered as a substitution for the minimum experience requirements.
Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
Knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, safety and quality assurance.
Ability to prioritize scheduling of work.
Communicate well through written and verbal means.
$13.01/hr - $15.06/hr
