The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a Research Specialist in the Hatfull Laboratory in the Department of Biological Sciences. The Research Specialist will perform advanced experiments in a microbiology laboratory that are aimed at understanding the diversity of Actinobacteriophages. Primary research responsibilities will include: investigating isolation and characterization of bacteriophages to various Actinobacteria including Mycobacteria, Gordonia, Arthrobacter, Microbacterium and Rhodococcus, supervisory and training responsibilities for student researchers, and coordinate routine operations of lab.
This Research Specialist will isolate DNA from bacteria and bacteriophages and use the DNA for various characterizations and experiments that include sequencing, restriction digest patterns, and advanced molecular genetics techniques such as BRED. This Research Specialist will grow and prepare laboratory stocks of actinobacteriophages, using bacterial hosts to propagate the phages. Bachelors Degree in Biology, Biochemistry or Molecular Biology. Training relevant to laboratory safety (e.g. Bloodborne pathogens, chemical safety) Environmental Health and Safety training and all relevant training modules before the applicant can begin in the lab ( will be provided locally).
