The Department of English at the University of Connecticut invites applications for one (1) one-year renewable Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP) position as Associate Director of First-Year Writing. The successful candidate will have exceptional communication skills with a strong commitment to writing instruction at the college level, both teaching and its administration in the English Department, as part of the First-Year Writing (FYW) program.
The ideal candidate will be expected to work with the Director of First-Year Writing to transition the program to a newly designed writing curriculum and pedagogy that emphasizes communications across a number of technologies (referred to in the field as "multimodal composition"). The new VAP role will have administrative, teaching, and service duties, which will include teaching FYW courses to first-year students, facilitating the graduate instructor Teaching Practicum, instructional development in the form of materials and workshops, and act as a liaison for students and instructors.

Completion of all requirements for the PhD in Rhetoric/Composition, English, or a closely related field by the start date of employment and evidence of a strong commitment to undergraduate education. The candidate must have experience teaching college-level writing with some graduate coursework in rhetoric/composition, linguistics, or second-language writing.
Evidence of engagement with current trends in writing studies and college-level writing, a record of teaching diverse range of students at a college or university using face-to-face classroom and remote/online learning formats, as well as experience with Writing Program Administration.
This is a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure track position that requires the equivalent of 7 courses a year, allocated to teaching, administration, and service. The person holding this position reports directly to the First-Year Writing Director and the Department Head of English. The position may be renewed annually dependent on funding and post-Covid-19 fiscal realities.
