We have a job opening for a biology technician. This job will be through the Ophthalmology Department of Washington University School of Medicine in the laboratory of Nathan Ravi, M.D., Ph.D. Our Washington University laboratory web site can be viewed at: http://vr-core.wustl.edu/Faculty/FacultyInfo.aspx?id=169. We are working on polymeric materials for use in ophthalmic applications. This position will be working with the biocompatibility of these polymers in animals and in tissue culture.
This position assists with the technical aspects of studies and experiments, including documentation and preparation of materials.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists with research studies, experiments and assays, including collection of data, preparation of solutions and set-up and maintenance of equipment.
Assists with small animal procedures, including surgeries and eye exams. Assists in recording observations and results.
Performs data entry and maintains data files on research.
Prepares tissue cultures, reagents, probe tests, etc.
Complies with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.
Assists with general lab maintenance and cleaning.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree and up to one year of experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling four years.
Experience in basic biology lab skills, such as using micro-pipettes, an analytical balance, pH meter, making solutions, protein gel electrophoresis and western blots.
Basic knowledge of chemistry.
Background and experience in cell biology, with expertise in tissue culture with sterile technique, histology staining, light and fluorescent microscopy.
Ability to be a team player with good interpersonal relationship skills.
Ability to follow instructions.
Experience in medicine, surgery, biocompatibility testing, chemical engineering and related areas.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators.
Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
Working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment.
The hiring range for this position is $14.07 - $18.99 per hour.
