UW Medicine Pathology brings together state-of-the-art technology and highly trained, world renowned personnel to provide comprehensive diagnostic and personalized service to physicians, community hospitals, independent laboratories, and other health care organizations. Our operations are based at the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, South Lake Union, Northwest Hospital and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Pathology faculty members also serve at Seattle Children's Hospital, the Veteran’s Administration Puget Sound Healthcare System, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. These collaborative efforts have generated innovative, translational studies in the basic mechanisms of disease as they apply to diagnostic pathology.
The Rabinovitch Laboratory in the Department of Pathology on the main campus at the University of Washington has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary (.75 FTE) Research Scientist/Engineer 2. Working under the oversight of the principal investigator, this position will perform laboratory experiments, data analysis, and assist in preparing reports. This position is funded for 1 year with the potential for longer term support as funding permits.
The Research Scientist / Engineer (RSE) will report to, and work closely with, Dr. Sweetwyne, a senior co-investigator in the lab, but will be expected to work independently on research and development of projects focusing on the cellular mechanisms of renal damage and regeneration in the context of aging. The RSE will devise and troubleshoot protocols, generate and interpret data, and propose next steps for the development of the project. In the course of this work the RSE will assume responsibility for coordinating work with outside collaborating research partners as well as collaborating with other members of the lab as needed. The RSE will present their research progress at lab meetings and assist the PI in data analyses as relevant for the project and carry out project-specific literature searches and analyses, and manuscript and/or proposal writing.
Specific research activities will include but will not be limited to: •Primary cell culture (mouse, human) in 2D and 3D formats •Interacting with human subject volunteers for sample collections •FACS live cell sorting •qRT-PCR •Protein expression analysis by Western blotting, ELISA • Immunohistochemistry and/or immunocytochemistry •Sample preparation for MassSpec proteomics and single cell transcriptomics •Fluorescent microscopy, image acquisition (confocal/brightfield) and analysis •Animal work (Biological sample collection, genotyping, some limited animal husbandry)
Minimum Requirements: •Bachelor’s Degree in Cell and Molecular Biology or related field with 3 or more years’ experience or equivalent combination of educational, postdoctoral and research staff experience in human/animal models of molecular and cellular biology. •Established record of independent execution of research projects. •Proven experience with sterile tissue culture and in at least 4 of the key activities listed above.
Desired: Master’s degree preferred. Strong skills in organization, ability to clearly communicate and trouble shoot results and comfort with some degree of protocol development. Collaborative team player. Experience working in the fields of either Kidney Biology or the Biology of Aging is not required but will be considered a plus.
