The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Childrenâs Hospital Los Angeles seeks to hire a full time faculty Assistant or Associate Professor Clinical Pediatrics, a physician-bioethicist to work with department and hospital leadership to build a robust pediatric bioethics center in southern California. This individual would have an academic appointment at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California and a clinical home in one of the four divisions of ACCM: pediatric anesthesiology, critical care, pain medicine, or palliative care. Between 0.3 and 0.5 FTE would be devoted to building and directing the Pediatric Bioethics Center. While the exact structure and functions of the Center would be developed by the director, in collaboration with department and hospital leadership, the expectation is that it would provide robust consultation services for both clinical ethics and the research institute, deliver impactful education across the hospital and the Keck School of Medicine at USC, and produce high quality scholarship in both empiric and conceptual domains. The director would play a key role in developing a strategy for the Centerâs growth and sustainability, including recruitment of additional faculty, cultivating philanthropic support, and obtaining grant funding.
The ideal candidate will be board certified in pediatric critical care, anesthesiology, pain medicine, or palliative care, and will have either an advanced degree in bioethics or equivalent experience and scholarly productivity. They should have experience conducting clinical ethics consultations, leading a hospital ethics committee, teaching bioethics to learners of multiple disciplines and training levels, and providing organizational and research ethics support. In addition, the ideal candidate will have authentic leadership skills, a short- and long-term vision for the Center. The director would also creatively engage a community of collaborators at USC including the Ethics and the Humanities, Ethics/Economics, Arts and the Law (HEAL) Program at Keck Medical School and the Pacific Center for Health Policy and Ethics at the Gould School of Law.

The core pillars of research strength in ACCM currently are in respiratory physiology, informatics, neurocritical care, outcomes and participation in multicenter clinical trials (primarily in the ICUs). CHLA is home to The Saban Research Institute (TSRI) where scientific inquiry is combined with clinical care devoted exclusively to children.Â Investigators at TSRI conduct basic, translational and clinical research, and are involved in collaborative projects with academic institutions worldwide.Â Two research buildings on the main campus comprise over 215,000 square feet for wet lab and dry lab research activities.
TSRI and CHLA maintain strong scientific and strategic alliances with USC and KSOM, where our physicians and scientists hold faculty appointments.Â One of the most notable collaborations is The Southern California Clinical and Translational Science Institute (SC CTSI).Â It was initially funded in 2008 with an NIH award, made jointly to USC and CHLA, provides critical resources to help advance cutting-edge research and scientific breakthroughs in patient and community health, with a special focus on diverse and vulnerable populations.Â SC CTSI has supported more than 800 investigators and nurtured research at USC and CHLA, successfully building interdisciplinary teams, advancing drug and device development, supporting clinical trials, engaging diverse communities in research, and training clinical and translational researchers. Its efforts have contributed more than $90M in new extramural funding, more than 500 scientific publications, more than 80 patent applications and three start-ups, in addition to tangible health improvements in surrounding communities.
The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine provides the following clinical services from approximately 38 FTE anesthesiologists, 22 FTE critical care medicine and 3 FTE palliative care physicians:
Anesthesiology and sedation services for the main operating room, ambulatory surgery center, radiology, cardiology, catheterization lab, and locations away from the main hospital campus,
Critical care medicine for the 24-bed pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), the 24-bed cardiothoracic intensive care unit (CTICU), Level I trauma unit, procedural sedation, and offsite PICU locations
Acute, post-op and chronic pain management services, including non-pharmacologic treatments such as dog therapy, acupuncture, biofeedback, etc.
Palliative care services, which includes physical, emotional, and spiritual support for children and teens with life-threatening illnesses, and support for their families.
Treatment in our ambulatory Pain and Palliative Care Center.
The department operates the largest training program at CHLA, teaching nearly 250 trainees per year including physician fellows and residents, student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNA), and anesthesia technicians who rotate from other nearby schools (USC, UCLA, Kaiser, and others).Â
