Summary: Des Moines University seeks a Dean of the College of Health Sciences (CHS) who is responsible for providing collaborative and consultative academic leadership and management within CHS. The Dean's primary responsibilities include the academic oversight of all programs within CHS including curriculum, planning and management of the operating budget, and development and implementation of strategies to promote the growth of the College's currently existing as well as new programs. The Dean is also responsible for creating an atmosphere conducive to scholarly pursuits. The Dean will lead the development and implementation of the strategic plan for the College that is aligned with the vision of the Board of Trustees and the President for the future of DMU as well as the strategic direction of the academic enterprise. The Dean works collaboratively as a member of the university's executive leadership team to advance the college and university strategic plans. The Dean also represents the college and, as appropriate, the university in the public and professional communities.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. The Dean will understand and advocate the guiding philosophy of “One University.” Educational Excellence – Responsible for assuring that students enrolled in the College’s programs are receiving exceptional educations as evidenced by development and assessment of learning outcomes and graduate measures. Accreditation – Responsible for the oversight of all programmatic accreditation actions within CHS and assisting in the university accreditation processes. Leadership – Responsible for developing and upholding a culture of collegiality and cooperation between CHS and the senior leadership of DMU. Alignment – Responsible for aligning strategic priorities and actions with the Board of Trustees’ and President’s vision for the future of DMU and alignment with the DMU’s academic enterprise strategic direction as formulated by the Provost. Strategic Planning – Responsible for the college’s visioning and strategic planning process that will support the university strategic plan. Academic Integrity – Responsible for creating, implementing and upholding policies and practices that assure the integrity of the degrees granted by the college. Research – Encourage research and scholarly activity on the part of the faculty and students. Clinic – Provide oversight for the CHS clinical department(s) in collaboration with other College Deans and DMU Clinic Administration. Faculty/Staff Development – Responsible for the overall recruitment, retention, and development efforts for the faculty and staff in the College. The goals of such efforts are to create and sustain a motivated, prepared and well-developed work force that is adequately prepared for promotion and tenure decisions and capable of meeting the requirements that are established for them in collaboration with their supervisor and in keeping with the University workload policy. Collaboration – Collaborate with COM and CPMS to ensure the efficient delivery of current and new academic programs. Foster collaboration between the the College of Health Sciences and the academic administrations of COM to meet the basic science curricular needs of all CHS programs. Inter-Professional Education and Clinical Practice – Work with the College of Osteopathic Medicine and the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery to foster collaboration in implementing inter-professional educational initiatives across campus, and in clinical practice within the DMU Clinic and other DMU clinical locations. Fiscal Management – Responsible for the fiscal viability of the college and its programs; responsible for the development, oversight, and management of the college and departmental budgets. External Affairs – Responsible for working to create collaborative partnerships with external organizations that can support the growth and education of the students in CHS. Participate in and successfully complete all University required training including, but not limited to discrimination/harassment and code of conduct. Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned. Serves as a Campus Security Authority for purposes of Clery Act Crime Reporting.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has oversight for the CHS administrative staff including the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs, and Department Chairs, the college’s Data and Project Coordinator, and the CHS Academic and Affiliations Assistant. The Dean of CHS carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include but are not limited to interviewing and/or motivating and/or training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; approval of salary recommendations; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience: Must hold a doctoral degree from an accredited higher education program. Preferably, a doctoral degree closely aligned with the programs offered in the college, or in the area of education/administration.
Must be qualified by education, training, and experience to provide effective leadership in education, scholarly activity and clinical training or administration.
If a graduate from a clinical program, must either hold a current practice license or was licensed at some point of their career.
Have at least five years of experience in academic leadership roles that include budget management authority.
Demonstrated success in previous administrative, chair, or academic leadership roles, as well as excellence in clinical training are highly desired.
Classroom teaching experience in an academic health center is highly desirable.
Record of moral and ethical methods of fiscal and human resource management.
