LAB AST 2 (Lab Assistant)
Under supervision provide technical and research support related to veterinary infectious disease epidemiology, diagnosis and prevention. Provide research support for the development and application of microbial, immunological and molecular diagnostic techniques to animal diseases. Participate in ongoing research projects in the field (dairy, beef, poultry, sheep and goat farms) and within the laboratory, including generation of data.

-Valid California driver's license required. -Lift up to 40 lbs. of supplies and equipment. -Squat, kneel, bend, stoop or stand for extended periods of time. -Contact with animals, including but not limited to repeated capture and prolonged restraint of animals. -Must be able to wear required protective clothing and other personal protection as needed. -Employee is responsible for following health, chemical, and safety guidelines/instructions. -Drive to farms that may be located few hundred miles from laboratory.
-Work in sterile environment. -This position works under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policies. -Employee may at times be required to work in areas where hazardous materials are present. -Work during the weekends is as needed to meet project deadlines. -Knowledge of the scientific disciplines of microbiology and molecular biology. -Skills to establish and prioritize work and schedule to meet deadlines and to accommodate changes in projects as the need arises. -Skills to calculate formulas, mix reagents, prepare bacterial growth media, and dilutions. Skills to safely work with infectious microbes. -Knowledge of basic lab skills; preparation of solutions and proficient use of standard lab equipment. -Skills to collect and handle samples and equipment in an aseptic manner when appropriate. -Interpersonal, oral and written communication to interact with individuals from other universities, agencies, farm owners and staff, both in person and on the phone. -Knowledge and experience with MAC and PC computers.
-Knowledge of lab regulation and University safety protocols including but not limited to handling treatment, disposal of hazardous waste, chemical, medical and bio-medical waste.
