Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The Department of Anesthesiology Research is seeking a Research Technologist. This individual will work closely with the supervisor to maintain preclinical rodent models (mice and rats) used to study cardiovascular diseases.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Maintaining an accurate mouse and rat colony census.
Breeding mice to maintain novel genotypes, ear-tagging and tail-snipping for genotyping.
Assisting with mouse and rat dissections, preparing tissue for experiments.
Responsibilities include general lab maintenance – preparation of buffers, autoclaving, glassware washing, and routine stock-keeping. Must maintain lab records and assist students and post-docs with routine experiments.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Familiarity with mouse and rat handling is a must. A good foundation in dissection of vascular tissue is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s). Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or lab environment.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
