The School of Medicine of the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Ophthalmology. Positions at Associate or Full Professor will also be considered. The Department of Ophthalmology is comprised of scientists representing a host of basic science and clinical disciplines, engaged in research with the goal of understanding the formation, function and pathophysiology of the visual system. The Department began a phase of significant expansion in 2017 when Jose-Alain Sahel, MD was appointed Department Chair, and this growth continues as the department prepares to move into the new ~300,000 square foot UPMC Vision and Rehabilitation Institute in 2022. As part of this continued growth we seek to expand our expertise in visual neuroscience and we are particularly interested in candidates who will help us build on established areas of interest in systems neuroscience, neural engineering, computational neuroscience, vision restoration and aging/cognitive dysfunction. We are especially interested in candidates who bring together experimental and computational approaches to studying visual perception, visual system aging, brain-computer interface and/or vision restoration, and who work in non-human primate systems.
The University of Pittsburgh has an exceptionally strong and collaborative neuroscience community with over 100 faculty participating in the Center for Neuroscience ( http://www.cnup.pitt.edu ), the Brain Institute ( http://www.braininstitute.pitt.edu/ ) as well as strong connections to Carnegie Mellon University through the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition ( http://www.cnbc.cmu.edu)This offers exciting and varied opportunities for collaborations across departments and universities. The Department of Ophthalmology is funded by a NIH P30 core grant and NIH T32 training grant. The University is currently ranked fifth in the nation in total NIH funding, and Pittsburgh is often noted as one of the most livable and affordable metropolitan areas. The position requires a Ph.D., M.D., or M.D/Ph.D., 2-3 years of postdoctoral training and a strong publication record. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in training of graduate and postdoctoral trainees and participate in departmental work in progress activities for trainees and teaching in a department-wide "Biology of Vision" course.
