Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Dean of Campus and Community Relations at Ohio University's Zanesville campus. Ohio University's regional campus system consists of five locations, in addition to Zanesville, there are locations at Chillicothe, Eastern (St. Clairsville), Lancaster, and Southern (Ironton). Each campus offers unique opportunities for a student-centered environment and to build campus/community relationships.
The Zanesville Campus lies in a suburban setting in the City of Zanesville with a population of 28,000 and a service district of 180,000. Approximately 2000 students, many of whom are first generation or non-traditional, commute to the 179-acre site one hour east of Columbus and two hours west of Pittsburgh. The Zanesville Campus is known for successful partnerships and collaborations with the community and with Zane State College, a co-located two-year institution that shares the campus. The campus offers thirteen bachelor's and six associate's degrees and the first two years of general studies in many majors. The campus employs full-time faculty, staff and part-time faculty.
As Dean of Campus and Community Relations, the Dean reports to the Executive Dean of Regional Higher Education and Lifelong Learning, and is responsible for the overall administration and vibrancy of a regional campus and for cultivating community relationships to build resilience within the respective community. In coordination with the Executive Dean of Regional Higher Education and Lifelong Learning, advocates for student needs that are unique to their campus and community.
Serves as the chief administrator responsible for the overall administrative oversight of a regional campus in direct coordination with appropriate university colleges, divisions, and departments:
oContribute to the development of a Regional Higher Education strategic plan and implement campus-level actions at their campus. oFosters cooperative, collegial work climates, which enhance communication, trust, and productivity of and among faculty, staff, and students. oCultivates an organizational/team climate that engages staff to develop and accomplish goals and objectives. oOversees facility use, maintenance, and security in coordination with appropriate university department. oCoordinates with the Associate Dean for Regional Higher Education and Lifelong Learning to ensure effective and efficient enrollment and student academic services on the campus, which may include enrollment management services, advising and retention, orientation, tutoring, testing, counseling, financial aid and scholarships, recruiting, College Credit Plus, and campus-life activities. oConsults with campus staff and Regional Higher Education leadership to address specific safety issues; reviews and updates the campus emergency action plan accordingly; reviews and updates the campus Business Continuity Plan. oResponds appropriately to the needs of faculty, staff, and students. oResponsible for managing and monitoring the campus budget in coordination with the RHE planning unit. oPerforms annual performance evaluations for assigned staff in direct coordination with appropriate university departments. oServes as a mediator in resolving problems arising among faculty and staff, in coordination with appropriate departments and/or units. oProvides leadership and guidance for development/fund raising. oParticipates in appropriate professional development opportunities.
Coordinates with Associate Dean of Regional Higher Education and Lifelong Learning in developing a student-centered, comprehensive course schedule for the campus, directly aligned with the Athens campus and coordinated with other regional campuses, to prevent the unnecessary duplication of course sections, including online and OULN. oSecures, supervises, and supports appropriate adjunct faculty to staff courses efficiently in coordination with appropriate academic units. oOversees management of campus classroom scheduling. oAdvises the Associate Dean of Regional Higher Education and Lifelong Learning about issues related to faculty relations, staffing needs, hiring processes, orientation, and adjunct and overload management.
Actively participates in Regional Campus Associate Deans’ meetings, promoting collaboration across the regional system.
Supports workforce development initiatives within their respective region, serves as the primary liaison for their campus, promoting external partnerships and opportunities for expanded campus programming. oEngages in economic, cultural, and social activities of the campus and community including advancement activities and fundraising. oProvides leadership for enhancing the visibility, enrollment, and resources of the campus -both on and off campus. oCommunicates effectively with various constituents within the campus, surrounding community, and nonacademic areas. oSeeks opportunities for community-based research. oCoordinates with economic development colleagues at TechGrowth, Innovation Center, etc. to build capacity within the campus community. oCoordinates with health and human services colleagues to build resilience within the community. oBuilds strong relationships with employers, local government officials, school districts, and community agencies to create local and regional partnerships for infrastructure, educational opportunities, co-curricular activities, regional development, and professional development/training. oWorking with the Executive Dean and others, recognizes opportunities for new degree programs, credit-bearing and non-credit-bearing credentials, lifelong learning, and professional development training.
Ensures the campus pursues excellence in the education of students, including but not limited to: program and course offerings; regional, national, and international recognition of scholarly, research and creative activities of the faculty; and the achievement and success of its students. oPromotes innovative teaching methods by supporting the infusion of technology into the teaching and learning process. oWorks with academic units to support program advisory groups for each academic program. oProvides a high quality student-centered educational environment oContributes to faculty promotion and tenure decisions in collaboration with their academic college and school or department.
Collaborates regularly with the Executive Dean, Regional Higher Education leadership, and regional campus leadership to identify, develop, and implement strategic initiatives; actively participates in Regional Higher Education and university leadership meetings, discussions, and planning.
The successful candidate will combine visionary leadership with an open and collegial managerial style to position the campus for continued success. This position offers an opportunity for an incoming Dean to make an imprint on the campus and to build upon their current success. There is an opportunity to emphasize innovative academic programs, including on-line learning, and student affairs programs that support a wide range of students, as well as to create and maintain community outreach initiatives, including outreach to business and industry. Additionally, the Dean plays an important leadership role in the economic, cultural, and social activities of the community.
This position requires university administrative/leadership experience, which may include service as an Associate Dean, Faculty Chair, Division Coordinator, Program Coordinator/Liaison, or other academic administrative role. The successful candidate must have budgetary knowledge; an earned doctorate or other terminal degree with record of college-level teaching and scholarly achievement sufficient to qualify for a tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor; ability to promote a collaborative workplace that emphasizes innovative education, teaching experience, scholarship, and diversity; knowledge of economic development and fundraising; and be able to demonstrate skill in creating, initiating and implementing strategic planning activities in addition to excellent problem-solving, communication (verbal and written), and human relations skills. The candidate must have a student-centered philosophy and a commitment to teaching excellence and the mission of the regional campuses. The candidate must have demonstrated experience managing facilities and staff.
In addition to knowledge of four-year and graduate programs, it is preferred that the candidate have knowledge of technical associate degrees, academic and student support services, student affairs, distance learning, and continuing education with business and industry. Direct experience developing and managing workforce development initiatives is preferred.
