The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) seeks to fill a research physicist position on magnetic diagnostics, plasma control, MHD studies, and scenario development. The NSTX-U device utilizes a large variety of inductive magnetic sensors to diagnose and control the plasma. These include Rogowski sensors for measurements of the plasma current, flux loop and Mirnov coil sensors for assessment of the plasma position, and arrays of sensors for measurement of 3D plasma instabilities. The data are utilized in both post-shot physics analysis and during the shot for real-time plasma control. The magnetic measurements are integral to the research operations of NSTX-U, and they also provide data relevant to MHD equilibrium and stability physics research, control algorithm development, and high-performance plasma scenario studies.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintenance of the magnetics diagnostics on NSTX-U (with help from PPPL engineering). (S)he will have the ability and willingness to work with a large team of technical individuals, including fellow researchers, engineers, and technicians. (S)he will support the operation of the NSTX-U device and support experimental planning and execution.
It is expected that the successful candidate will develop and plan experiments, analyze the data collected, and publish the results. The candidate will work with the larger team to identify specific research activities and topics.
Maintain the magnetics diagnostics on NSTX-U (with help from PPPL engineering): 30%.
Support the operation of the NSTX-U device and support experimental planning and execution: 30%.
Develop and plan experiments, analyze the data collected, and publish the results: 40%.
Education and Experience:
Ph.D. in plasma physics or a similar field. The position is at a level higher than post-doctoral. Experience with magnetics diagnostics on magnetic fusion devices is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience with analog electronics and data acquisition systems. Experience in scientific programming in languages such as MATLAB, IDL or Python.
