Rice University's Program in Writing and Communication https://pwc.rice.edu/ is now accepting applications for a lecturer position in data visualization. This one-year appointment is a full-time, non-tenure track position with renewal contingent on performance.
The annual teaching load is five sections of DSCI 304: Introduction to Effective Data Visualization, which is a required undergraduate course for the Rice Data Science Minor https://ga.rice.edu/programs-study/departments-programs/engineering/data-science/data-science-minor/ (also open to non-minors). In addition, the position will collaborate with the faculty and staff of the Program in Writing and Communication (PWC) and its partners to advance visual communication across the various schools, departments, and programs at Rice. Specifically, this position may develop workshops on data visualization topics and serve on the planning committee for Rice's biennial Visual Communication Symposium https://vcs.rice.edu/. The work with the PWC can provide opportunities for one course release per year.
While the disciplinary specialization is open, scholars with interdisciplinary methodologies are strongly encouraged to apply. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of data science, candidates must be intellectually curious about diverse displays of visual communication and versatile in their pedagogical approaches. Students interested in data visualization at Rice include those majoring in STEM, social science, and humanities fields. The ideal candidate will be comfortable discussing and representing both quantitative and qualitative research.
Interested candidates must apply online: http://jobs.rice.edu/postings/23630 Please submit a (1) cover letter, (2) CV/resume, (3) teaching philosophy, and (4) portfolio of 4-5 examples of visuals/visual projects (9mb max), as well as two letters of reference.
