Job Summary The Caltech student community benefits from 5 Residential Life Coordinators. Residential Life Coordinators (RLCs) at Caltech support the residents and resident advisors as well as facilitate community development for their respective areas. The Graduate Residential Life Coordinator is responsible for multiple housing complexes, 4-8 resident advisors and the individual support, programming, and events for their areas. The GRLC will report directly to the AVP for Student affairs and Residential Experience.
The GRLC will develop meaningful relationships with graduate students. He/she will address the curricular and co-curricular needs of the graduate student community, and will work with colleagues to support the academic, emotional and wellness needs of the students. He/she will engage in ongoing communication within the graduate residential areas - all with the goal of providing an inclusive community and a rewarding Caltech experience to our master's and doctoral students.
As a staff member in graduate student housing, the GRLC will hire, train and supervise the work of the student Resident Associates (GRAs) and will appoint, train, and advise the Catalina Community Associates (CCAs) who develop social and educational programs for their residents. The GRLC will attend weekly Graduate Residential Life and Housing meetings and programs, will train and advise residential life staff members, and collaborate with student affairs offices and administrators.
Job Duties RLCs at Caltech live on campus and attend student functions, events and meetings. The GRLC will: - Identify and address the unique aspects of working within a residential graduate student community and build a supportive environment where graduate students can be successful - Manage graduate students' transitional programming to the Institute each summer and orientation each fall - Initiate first year programs for graduate students and will provide supportive programs for more senior graduate students - Attend area programs and meals, host weekly office hours, organize social events, support student activities and field trips. The GRLC will also support the annual events and programs that are managed by the Graduate Studies Office (e.g. commencement and the student faculty colloquium) - Participate in Caltech wellness programs and therefore participate in ongoing trainings and professional development around these important issues - The GRLC will manage the administrative functions of the residential area by registering events, reserving space for students, and working with the Housing office to help with issues of occupancy, maintenance and other needs - The GRLC will be available during regular business hours and will also be accessible during afterhours as an on-call professional and an in-residence resource to the community. The RLC will also participate in on-call work, campus emergency and crisis response efforts and individual student interventions - The GRLC will cover undergraduate on-call work and therefore should participating in discussions that outline the needs and programs specific to that area
Basic Qualifications - A master's degree in education, social work or related field - Two or more years of professional experience working with students in a higher education setting - Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as the ability to multi-task, prioritize and be flexible - Appreciation of the culture and priorities of a science and technology-focused research institution
Preferred Qualifications - Experience as a student or professional at an academically rigorous institution/university - Professional experience addressing graduate student needs and understanding graduate student development - Appreciation for the demands on graduate students, especially at the doctoral level
