The Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement (O.D.I.C.E.) is seeking part time temporary social work interns to work in the HUB.
The Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement (O.D.I.C.E.) is committed to promoting an inclusive learning environment by enhancing college and community efforts to recruit, retain, and graduate minority students. The office serves as a resource and advocates for the Jefferson community on issues of diversity, inclusion, and equity. The office promotes the success of all students through programs, services, and community partnerships that holistically address cultural, educational, and civic growth
The HUB at Jefferson The HUB is committed to transforming the lives of Jefferson students through assistance with meeting basic needs and accessing campus and community resources. The HUB aims to remove non-academic barriers to college success and contributes to educational attainment for all students. Services of the HUB include: connecting students to on-campus and community supports, addressing food insecurity through The Pantry, and hosting events and workshops to promote student well-being.
Black Student Initiative through Lumina Foundation
The HUB at Jefferson, with the assistance of the Lumina Foundation, will focus on one-on-one student coaching that increases student enrollment, persistence, graduation, and overall success for African-American students who do not reside in the Zones of Hope neighborhoods (this excludes students who live in the neighborhoods of Shawnee, Russell, California, Parkland, and Newburg).
Duties and Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Establish a presence and build one-on-one relationships with students participating in the Black Student Initiative, as well as all students who frequent the HUB at Jefferson's services.
Help students develop individualized success plans that support their ability to persist and graduate by promoting self-advocacy & fostering resiliency within students.
Schedule and execute monthly coaching appointments with students participating in the Black Student Initiative.
Proactively build a caseload and keep data for student participating in the Black Student Initiative, as well as keep data for individuals who utilize the HUB at Jefferson.
Utilize Starfish retention tool for scheduling meetings and keeping notes.
Maintain a presence in the HUB at Jefferson & engage with students in the HUB.
Develop a knowledge base of college and community resources to appropriately refer students, and create relationships with these members in these community resources for programming purposes.
Assist students with academic and social integration into postsecondary education.
Help students manage & cope with non-academic barriers (housing, food insecurity, healthy relationships, etc.) This may include triaging student emergencies, and connecting students to campus & community resources, as well as training in conflict management and crisis intervention.
Co-supervise Federal Work Study and Ready to Work student workers.
Assist the HUB Student Success Coordinator in the daily activities of the HUB Food Pantry, which includes, but is not limited to, stocking the pantry, checking temperatures, signing students into the pantry, and assisting student workers with food safety. This will require some lifting.
Salary: $11.00 per hour
In order to be eligible for this internship, candidates must be graduate students in MSW/MSSW (students are preferred) or a related field. The preferred candidate must be able to dedicate at least 10 hours up to a maximum of 20 hours per week. Candidates must commit for the entire 2020-2021 academic year (August – May).
Candidates should also have experience and sensitivity working with colleagues and students from diverse backgrounds and a commitment to fostering an inclusive work and learning environment in which students from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and personal experiences are welcomed and can thrive.
