Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
This position requires a proficient and experienced laboratory technician with a sophisticated understanding of techniques and a solid foundation in the underlying science. Successful candidate can conduct research independently or with minimal supervision. Participates in the design of experiments, analyzes data, and may contribute to manuscripts. May have independent project, and/or participate in direction/supervision of the laboratory. Will provide training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis. Will support a study that is evaluating the impact of Monocyte Distribution Width (MDW) on differentiating illness severity and aid treatment decisions in the emergency department hospital.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Participates in planning experiments and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices.
Proficient research laboratory specialist with a sophisticated understanding of techniques and a solid foundation in the underlying science, gained from professional experience.
Selects, develops, performs and evaluates research methods; operates appropriate equipment. Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, scintillation counter, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and/or utilizes laminar flow hood. May also utilize other sophisticated instrumentation such as fluorescence or luminescence spectrophotometer.
Analyzes data, formulates conclusions and creates appropriate statistical presentations, including graphs and charts, for the purpose of reporting research/laboratory results.
Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.
Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens. Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace. Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training, as appropriate. Monitors biohazard/radiation safety standards and proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.
Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures. Keeps current knowledge of vendors and suppliers of materials specific to the laboratory requirements. Monitors equipment performance and maintenance schedules. May perform routine repair or replacement of standard parts.
This description is a general statement of required duties and responsibilities performed on a regular and continuous basis; the Research Specialist will perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications (mandatory): Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field. One (1) year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques required. Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred qualifications: Two years related research experience.
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities: Excellent organizational and time management skills required. Independent and self-motivated, needing little to no supervision. Highly organized and detail oriented. Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities required. Excellent oral and written communication skills required. Demonstrated strong, positive interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively across disciplines.
Work Schedule/Hours: Two shifts Monday – Friday 8am-4pm & 4PM-12am
JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
