In collaboration with the ISP communications team, the writer/content strategist will work across the university and the world to connect with Spartan students, faculty, staff and alumni and tell the stories of Michigan State’s international work. This position will play a key role in raising the visibility of MSU’s international teaching, research and engagement by developing written content and content strategies for a variety of communications platforms. Examples of the writer/content strategist’s responsibilities include publishing news articles on innovative scientific research, interviewing Spartans about their global experiences, engaging with followers on social media, and collaborating on new and creative ways to reach ISP’s target audiences.
The successful candidate will be an exceptional storyteller with the ability to translate complex research and programs into accessible and compelling stories, and have demonstrated skills and experience in a variety of writing styles, including headline writing, content marketing, and writing for the web and social media. A passion for international education and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is essential.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Identify topics, interview sources, and compose news articles in alignment with ISP’s content strategies
Research, write, and edit content for brochures, annual reports, newsletters, websites, social media, and other communications
Manage ISP’s social media presence
Develop messaging, scripts, and talking points for ISP initiatives
Compose, edit, and distribute press releases and assist with media relations
Develop concepts, storyboards, and scripts for videos
Manage content calendar, from concept development through publication schedule
Monitor relevant publications, news and other outlets for content connected to MSU’s international activities
Develop and track metrics to measure reach and audience engagement with ISP communications
Review, proofread and/or edit materials for content, organization, readability, usability and style
Assist with website content management
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program in Journalism, Communications, English, or related field; five to eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in writing, editing, content development and planning; proficiency in AP style; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
The desired candidate should have exceptional organization skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously; ability to work independently and as part of a team; basic graphic design skills; some proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite; experience with producing video/video scripts; experience in the production of large print publications and magazines.
