The Department of History, Bates College, in Lewiston, Maine, invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of History to begin work August 1, 2020. The annual teaching load is five courses spread over two semesters and a three-and-half-week Short Term in the spring. We seek someone who can teach a survey course on North America before 1820, a mid-level course on the American Revolution, two other courses of their choosing and a Short Term course. The work will also include advising senior theses. Backgrounds in other fields may vary, but Native American history and/or environmental history are preferred. Preference will be given to candidates who will have completed by August 1, 2020 their Ph.D. in History, American Studies, or a related field.
