Essential Job Duties:
The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University invites applicants for a full-time Research Associate position in the Forest Biotechnology Group (FBG).
The successful candidate is expected to provide high-level research support for projects and experiments that explore:
Design and conduct research experiments in the area of 1) Molecular, biochemical and genomic analyses of tree phenotypes, 2) biotic and abiotic stress responses in forest tree species, 3) genome-editing/novel genetic engineering, 4) and engineering of tree crops with improved phenotypic traits for the growth and support of North Carolina’s tree industry.
Analyze experimental results, draw conclusions, and prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals. Work with reviewers, editors and co-authors until manuscripts are accepted and published.
Work closely with faculty to design experiments and write grant proposals to obtain funding to support research projects, in collaboration with faculty in the Department of Forestry & Environmental Resources and elsewhere.
Additional duties of the Research Associate include, but are not limited to the following:
Coordinate and conduct multiple, concurrent assignments, including the development of independent research objectives.
Assist in training and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students working in the Forest Biotechnology Laboratory, including supervision of research projects as well as oversight of routine laboratory tasks.
Travel to attend meetings with professional colleagues and present results, as well as meetings with stakeholders to learn their perspectives and needs.
Laboratory and greenhouse maintenance and cleanup, materials ordering, organize and participate in laboratory progress meetings.
Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Ability to develop, design, or execute fundamental research activities for single or multiple research project(s)
Ability to participate in formulating research methods and suggesting options for improving quality and recommending solutions.
Ability to manage day-to-day lab operations.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
We are looking for a highly motivated and creative individual with strong background in the following molecular biology areas: gene cloning (traditional, USER, Gateway, and RACE); expression and purification of recombinant proteins in E. coli and S. cerevisiae; FPLC purification of proteins; infiltration and expression of recombinant genes in N. benthamiana and A. thaliana; in vitro enzyme assays of recombinant affinity tagged and purified proteins; GC-MS/LC-MS analyses; nucleic acid extraction (DNA, RNA, mRNA enrichment); qPCR; metabolite extraction and familiarity with terpenoid and phenolic analyses; microscopy sample preparation (sectioning, staining, resin embedding) for electron, confocal, bright field, laser micro dissection (LMD), and experience with electron microscopy (EM), confocal, bright field, and LMD techniques.
Lab management skills preferred include: ordering of laboratory supplies and equipment; monitoring and coordination of equipment maintenance; financial records management associated with ordering of supplies and equipment; providing training and management of undergraduate students, graduate students, staff, visiting students/scientists, post-docs, and volunteers; maintaining inventories of lab vectors, clones, standards, chemicals, plant materials, equipment, and cell lines; coordination of shipping and receiving of samples to external collaborators and service providers according to shipping regulations, customs, and import/export restrictions; participating in various committees as required.
Experience totaling 10 years or more is preferred. Teamwork and excellent communication skills, independent scientific thinking and planning are expected.
