Essential Job Duties:
The Executive Director of Development will provide the leadership, strategic direction, management, and coordination for all development efforts for the Poole College of Management at NC State University. This includes planning, managing, and implementing an annual operating plan and budget designed to attain the development goals and objectives of the college within available resources. The Executive Director will create fundraising strategies that increase the college's support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other sources. A major responsibility is to provide innovative leadership, mentoring, and strategic direction to a staff of four development and professionals as well as modeling Plus Delta fundamentals in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting prospective major gift donors.
The Executive Director reports to the Dean with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Assistant Vice Chancellor of University Advancement. It is expected that the Executive Director will work in close collaboration with campus leaders, other fundraising professionals, faculty, and key volunteer leadership to achieve the fundraising goals and potential of the organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Executive Director include, but are not limited to the following:
Developing and working to achieve annual fundraising goals and plans in collaboration with the Dean and Assistant Vice Chancellor for University Development; monitoring progress against goals.
Planning, directing, and implementing a comprehensive major gift program that generates individual donors, as well as foundation, corporate, and other philanthropic support on a continuing basis consistent with fundraising goals of the College.
Managing the development office in a fiscally sound manner by ensuring that the appropriate systems, staffing and procedures are in place to support fundraising goals.
Working in close collaboration with the Dean, faculty, staff, other fundraising professionals, campus leaders, and key volunteer leadership to achieve fundraising objectives;
Participating in all aspects of the gift cycle.
Applying Plus Delta best practices, leading strategies to identify, qualify, prioritize, cultivate, solicit, recognize, and steward donors and prospects.
Facilitating a growth oriented, accountable, collaborative and donor-centric culture.
Applying the AMP model, moving prospects and donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure while adhering to the highest ethical standards.
Providing support, vision, and strategic direction for the Poole College of Management Advisory Board to maximize fundraising efforts;
Developing and monitoring all prospect cultivation strategies and contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations and stewardship.
Managing the development team to ensure that the appropriate systems, staffing and procedures are in place to support fundraising goals.
Participating in all relevant University-wide development activities.
Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Attend a variety of events throughout the year.
Regular travel and occasional night and weekend work is required.
Supervises 4 permanent employees.
Requires a relevant post-Baccalaureate degree with a minimum of three (3) years or greater of related professional experience, or a relevant undergraduate degree and a minimum of five (5) years or greater of relevant experience may be substituted for the advanced degree.
The following qualifications & skills are required:
Deep understanding and appreciation of the principles, best practices, and ethics of fundraising.
Management and team development experience.
Successful track record in promoting fundraising priorities through the development of effective working relationships with faculty, senior academic leaders, volunteers and fundraising colleagues.
Proven experience with cold calling, negotiating and securing major gifts ($50,000+) from individuals, foundations, and corporations.
Ability to take academic priorities and translate them into development opportunities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; outstanding interpersonal skills.
Strong organizational skills with a high attention to detail.
Ability to build trust-based, collegial and effective relationships as part of a team in a large, complex organization.
Empathetic disposition, perseverance, and an optimistic and positive attitude.
Professional maturity and enthusiasm for a growing and changing environment.
Volunteer management experience.
Exceptional reasoning, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
Self-motivated and self-starting.
Computer literacy and competency with electronic donor information.
The following qualifications & skills are preferred, but not required:
Demonstrated success in negotiating and closing six and seven-figure gifts.
Experience in higher education fundraising
Prior experience in a comprehensive capital campaign.
An understanding of the land grant, research Tier One university environment.
Familiarity with NC State University.
Required license or certification:
A valid North Carolina Driver's License is required within 60 days of the start date. Must be maintained as a condition of employment.
