Senior or Mid-Level Faculty Recruitment in the Biomedical Sciences and Associate Chief of Staff-Research (ACOS-R)
The University of South Carolina School of Medicine (SOM) and the Columbia VA Health Care System (CVAHCS) have developed joint research missions in broad areas that particularly impact residents of South Carolina including cardiovascular disease, neurosciences, and behavioral health. Associated with this effort, we invite applications from outstanding candidates for a faculty position in the SOM at the Associate or Professor rank. The candidate will lead the SOM/CVAHCS translational research team in this bold research opportunity and will hold a dual appointment as Associate Chief of Staff-Research Service Line at the CVAHCS. The SOM is part of a Carnegie R1 research university that has achieved national prominence in research, education, and community engagement.
Successful candidates will manage a large research portfolio and this position will be stationed at the integrated CVAHCS-SOM medical campus. Successful candidates are expected to have a strong record of federal funding and scholarly activity, plus demonstrated leadership skills and administrative experience. Successful candidates are expected to have recent or ongoing VA/NIH research funding in areas of the VA and SOM research priority, particularly cardiovascular, neuroscience, and behavioral health research.
The CVAHCS is a level 1C teaching hospital with a full range of patient care services. In affiliation with the University of South Carolina, School of Medicine (SOM), there are available state of the art research facilities with significantly funded research programs in cardiovascular disease and neurosciences. There are also clinical research activities in other areas relevant to VA’s mission. Applicants will join a collegial, collaborative, and expanding joint research program. This position holds the opportunity for access to the affiliate health care system which is one of the largest in the Southeast- PRISMA Health. The CVAHCS also has an affiliated non-profit research foundation, the Dorn Research Institute, (DRI) which facilitates funded clinical research/trials. In conjunction with the SOM, a Research Center for Transforming Health has been established with the mission of developing sustainable physician-scientist clinical/translational partnerships.
Advertised Minimum Qualifications :
This position is open to a PhD, MD or MD/PhD. As indicated above, the successful candidate will hold a dual appointment as Associate Chief of Staff-Research Service Line in the Columbia VA Health Care System. Therefore, as required by Executive Order 11935, only United States citizens and nationals may compete for this competitive position, unless there are no qualified citizens available. For MDs, the candidates must hold a doctor of medicine degree or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Physicians must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must have current licensure and completed a residency training or its equivalent. Applicants at the Associate Professor rank must have a PhD, MD or equivalent degree in a biomedical science related field and at least three years of experience as an Assistant Professor, have expertise in teaching graduate and medical students, and a substantial record of publications and extramural research funding. Applicants for appointment at the Professor rank must have at least three years of experience as an Associate Professor, and evidence of a national/international reputation in their research field, an outstanding record of research productivity, and a substantial record of extramural research funding.
