The Mpala Research Centre (MRC) in Laikipia County, Kenya seeks an experienced Summer Field Advisor to mentor 5-10 Princeton undergraduate students who will be conducting independent research and participating in internships at MRC in summer 2020. For student researchers, the Advisor will provide on-site support to supplement and operationalize the advice students receive from their Princeton faculty advisor and the MRC Executive Director. In addition, the Advisor will oversee aspects of Princeton student life including co-curricular programming, health and wellness, and response to crisis and conflict. Reporting to the HR/Administrator and consulting with the Executive Director as necessary, the Advisor will serve as the first point of contact for Princeton undergraduate students and a critical liaison to the Mpala staff on issues related to the students. The Advisor will be in residence at Mpala for roughly 10 weeks from mid-June to mid-August 2020.
This is a half-time appointment and the Advisor may pursue their own research or writing for the remainder of the time. This position would be well-suited for a postdoc or independent researcher.

Supplement and operationalize advice students receive on conducting research in a range of academic fields, including on experimental design, human subject regulations, etc.
Support and guide students in managing operational aspects of field research, including navigating Mpala’s processes, procuring materials, team coordination, etc.
Coordinate with Mpala operations staff and other summer program staff to ensure smooth management of all aspects of student life, including co-curricular programming and management of concerns about health, wellness, crisis, and conflict.
Maintain and ensure appropriate balance between facilitation of cutting-edge research, education of aspiring scientists, and conservation of Mpala’s land for the benefit of Kenya.
Demonstrated passion for advancing science, conservation, and education, preferably in Kenya or in other parts of the Global South.
Operational experience running field-based experiments, programs, and/or projects. Familiarity with Laikipia and/or Mpala’s processes, procedures, and staff is preferred.
Familiarity with the academic and co-curricular expectations of an American-based liberal arts undergraduate education. Experience in student life roles would be an asset.
Strong customer-service orientation, dedicated to assuring a productive and congenial experience.
Ability to work with a wide variety of people, including Kenyan and American students, faculty members, administrators and officials from all over the world.
Strong communication skills, oral and written.
Commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards; personal and professional integrity above reproach.
Strong educational credentials, ideally a Master’s degree in an experimental or field-based discipline.
