The teaching and research activities of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology (MCB) concern the molecular structures and processes of cellular life and their roles in the function, reproduction, and development of living organisms. This agenda covers a broad range of specialized disciplines, including biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, structural biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, cell biology, developmental biology, tumor biology, microbiology, immunology, pathogenesis and neurobiology. The types of living organisms from which the departmental faculty draws its working materials are as diverse as its disciplinary specializations, ranging from viruses and microbes through plants, roundworms, annelids, arthropods, and mollusks to fish, amphibia, and mammals. The faculty of the department is organized into five divisions: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Cell and Developmental Biology; Genetics, Genomics and Development; Neurobiology; and Immunology and Pathogenesis.
The goal of the Adesnik Laboratory is to reveal the neural basis of perception. More specifically, we want to understand exactly how cortical microcircuits process sensory information to drive behavior. While decades of research have carefully outlined how individual neurons extract specific features from the sensory environment, the cellular and synaptic mechanisms that permit ensembles of cortical neurons to actually process sensory information and generate perceptions are largely unknown.
Preparation of animals for neurophysiological experiments, including animal surgeries, viral injections, monitoring of animals, behavioral training of animals.
Animal colony maintenance and genotyping, including: animal breeding, weaning, culling, and genotyping by tissue biopsy and assay by PCR with a standard thermocycler.
Regular record keeping of all animals in the colony, as well as daily recording the body weight and drinking volume of animals involved in behavioral studies, and providing appropriate water volumes to animals on restricted water diets.
Histology and immunohistochemistry: including animal perfusion, tissue extraction, tissue slicing with a freezing microtome, immunostaining and processing and mounting of fixed and stained tissue slices.
Stereotactic surgery: including proper anesthetic induction with a precision isoflurane vaporizer, fixation of mice in a stereotaxic apparatus, performing craniotomies with a micro-drill, microinjection of dyes and AAV viruses with a syringe pump, suture of the skin, and post- surgical supervision.
Other duties as assigned
Understanding of biology at the level of a B.S. in biology or a related field
Excellent organizational and management skills
Excellent interpersonal interaction skills
Expertise in at least one of the following: PCR, immunohistochemistry, animal husbandry, stereotactic surgery
General facility with mathematical skills required to prepare buffers and solutions

The University of California was chartered in 1868 and its flagship campus - envisioned as a "City of Learning" - was established at Berkeley, on San Francisco Bay. Today the world's premier public university and a wellspring of innovation, UC Berkeley occupies a 1,232 acre campus with a sylvan 178-acre central core. From this home its academic community makes key contributions to the economic and social well-being of the Bay Area, California, and the nation.
