The Department of Civil and Environmental engineering (CEE) is a complex academic department within the College of Engineering. The Department is composed of 7 graduate programs: Structural Engineering, Mechanics and Materials; Environmental Engineering; Transportation Engineering; Engineering and Project Management; Geosystems; Systems Engineering; and Energy, Civil Infrastructure and Climate.
The Department is composed of approximately 40 regular faculty, 3 Professors of the Graduate School, 25 Emeriti faculty, 1 Professor-in-Residence, 6 adjunct faculty, 30 Lecturers, 80 visiting scholars, post-docs and students, and more than 350 undergraduate and 480 graduate students.
US News & World Report has ranked CEE's graduate and undergraduate programs #1 nationwide for 2019. CEE's doctoral program topped the 2010 National Research Council rankings.
This position is designed to provide a high-level of comprehensive support to Master's students and outreach to potential donors, distinguished alumni, and alumni in general, including but not limited to social media communications and event support.
Provides high-level strategic editorial, design, and analytical-level duties centering on developing content and implementing communication and political strategy for departmental informational vehicles, including the CEE website, online newsletters, video display monitors, and any corresponding print publications. Coordinates campus logistics for the CEE Academy of Distinguished Alumni, acknowledges Academy gifts, and updates Academy web pages and other Academy-related communications. Acts as point of contact for inquiries from the news media, campus public affairs office, College of Engineering marketing and communications office, and the public.
The incumbent will report to the Department Manager. Assignments will come from the Department Manager, Department Chair, and/or Vice Chair for Graduate Studies.
60% Under general supervision, organize functions supporting career placement opportunities for CEE Master of Science degree students including scheduling meetings with MS students (including but not limited to town hall meetings between the Chair and current students, events supporting MS student diversity, meetings between the Chair and prospective MS students, and ad hoc meetings between friends in the industry/alumni and CEE MS students), career fair activities, and alumni/student events and communications.
Proactively meet with and get to know CEE MS students to learn about both new and ongoing needs of this population. Meet with Department Leadership (Chair, VC Graduate Studies, Dept. Manager) to strategize how best to respond to these needs in order to best support current students and with an eye to ongoing recruitment to the MS program.
In collaboration with the Department Chair and/or the Vice Chair for Graduate Studies, and/or the CEE Academy of Distinguished Alumni and/or the CEE Advisory Council implements a variety of departmental, alumni, and student-related programs and events designed to engage alumni/potential donors and current/prospective students.
Assists with annual Academy of Distinguished Alumni banquet including logistical arrangements, catering, parking, audio-visual, registration and participant list, sponsorship solicitation, payment problem-solving, and acknowledgement, program creation, commemorative plaque and certificate orders, and communications related to the event.
30% Write, edit, and assemble content and implement coherent communication and political strategy, as well as quality control, for departmental informational vehicles, including the CEE website, Youtube channel, Instagram, online newsletters, campus Big Give and crowdfunding campaigns, video display monitors, Davis Hall directories, and miscellaneous signage as needed.
Working with the Chair and Manager proactively brainstorm creative approaches, engaging stories and the best technology for promoting the CEE Department to new students, the COE, campus, alumni, and other outside constituents.
Act as department liaison with COE Marketing and Communications staff, COE College Relations, and the College Relations Alumni Database staff. Forward departmental news items for distribution in COE online and print vehicles and social media network.
Serve as content editor for the CEE website, ensuring all content updates, additions, and navigation meets Department and Berkeley standards, as well as website best practices. Work with faculty, staff, or students on reasonable and suitable alternatives if their requests do not conform to Department web policy. Manage content organization in consultation with web programmer and IT supervisor when necessary.
Miscellaneous communication: 1) order UCB business cards for faculty and staff; 2) using CADS access, edit the CEE give.berkeley.edu page; 3) using Berkeley Academic Guide access, edit the CEE departmental overview' and contact' fields; 4) update and order the printing of Davis Hall directories; 5) update faculty and staff contact information each semester; 6) act as CEE approver for Berkeley Calendar events; 7) liaison with videographer as needed; 8) create one-time signage or banners as needed; 9) arrange for offsite design services as needed; 10) edit development communications from CEE student groups, student affairs officers' fund reports, human resources job postings, holiday and events publicity; and 11) act as point of contact for inquiries from the news media, campus or COE public affairs office, and the public, referring inquiries to the appropriate party.
10% Coordinate semi-annual department Distinguished Lectures, Departmental Lightning Talks, as well as special ad hoc seminars and celebratory events (e.g. receptions for recently elected faculty to the NAE). Arrange logistics, catering, publicity, AV. Oversee event set up and break down, process reimbursements, and archive materials.

The salary range designated for this position: $50,400 - $61,600; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
