A Laboratory Technician II position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Alison Ravenscraft in the UTA Biology Department. The Ravenscraft Lab will study the potential for bacterial symbionts to detoxify pesticides, influence temperature tolerance, and facilitate herbivory in insect hosts.
DNA extractions and PCR- grinding samples, using DNA extraction kits, setting up Polymerase Chain Reactions. Freezing and culturing bacterial strains- placing strains in freezer, making freezer stocks, streaking cells on petri dishes. Insect husbandry-moving insects from cage to cage, feeding, cleaning cages, watering host plants. Lab ordering- placing orders, comparing quotes, MaveShop, Procard. Preparation of solutions and stocks- measuring ingredients, autoclaving solutions, pouring petri dishes. Plant cultivation- planting seeds, watering plants, cleaning up old plants.
Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field. Ability to work independently, detail-oriented strong organization and time management skills. Ability to work as a part of a team with excellent communication skills.
Previous experience working in a Microbiology lab. Experience with DNA extractions and PCR. Experience making bacterial growth media.
