The Department of Medicine (the Department) is the largest department in the School of Medicine with nearly 2,500 staff, faculty, trainees and students and an annual budget of approximately $450 million consisting of patient care revenue, sponsored research funds, endowments and gifts, state funds and affiliated hospital funding associated with the academic programs within the department. The department is made up of thirteen subspecialty divisions: Allergy and Infectious Diseases; Cardiology; Dermatology; Gastroenterology; General Internal Medicine; Gerontology & Geriatric Medicine; Hematology; Medical Genetics; Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition; Nephrology; Oncology; Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine; and Rheumatology. These divisions occupy space and manage programs at multiple UW Medicine sites and affiliated entities.
The Department of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Director of Finance and Administration.
The Director of Finance and Administration reports to the Department Chair and School’s Chief Financial Officer and serves as the strategic partner to the chair and administrative leader for the operations of the Department. As such, the Director has a comprehensive range of responsibilities, including: strategic planning and leadership for the department, financial planning/management, budget development, special projects, oversight for human resources for both academic/faculty positions and staff as well as all financial and operational activities. Success in the positions will require a highly skilled leader who can balance programmatic needs in the clinical services, research and educational programs as well as the financial resources of the Department. The position requires an excellent communicator who can work with all members of the department ranging from UW Medicine leadership team, the department leadership team and all faculty, trainees, and staff. The position requires a leader who can lead projects, supervise a large team and effectively delegate. The position will require a strong collaborator who can effectively and nimbly lead committees, small workgroups and successfully multi-tasking important initiatives for the Chair and/or the department leadership.
As a UW SOM Department Director of Finance and Administration, the incumbent carries out duties prescribed by the UWSoM in directing, overseeing, or partnering with affiliated institutions and organizations. The critical knowledge and skills are organized into the following functional areas of: Financial Management and Development Activities, Operations Management, Clinical Service and Practice Plan Management, Compliance and Risk Management, Research Management, Information Management, Human Resource Management, Facilities Management, and Educational Program(s) Management. He/she acts in an advisory capacity to the Chair and various Department committees, providing financial guidance, background information, and management advice. In addition, the Director is the Department's primary working-level interface with the Dean's Office, the Practice Plans, and other departments in the University regarding administrative issues.

Proven leadership and sophisticated communication skills.
At least seven years of supervisory and office management experience. Demonstrated experience working with large, highly structured personnel systems.
At least five years of management-level experience, preferably in an academic medical center or hospital environment.
Demonstrated experience in business planning, financial analysis, and/or strategic planning.
Demonstrated ability to maintain harmonious working relationships and effectively address complex and sensitive administrative issues.
Experience in performing complex medical center/departmental financial analyses
Experience in large organizational budgeting, budget management, and reporting
Experience with clinical departments in a medical center/hospital environment.
Experience in physician group practice operations and financial management.
Experience in sponsored research administration and work with grant funding agencies
Experience in academic educational programs
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA), Health Care Administration, Public Health, or related field.
