Essential Job Duties:
The Research Assistant will contribute to the Highway Systems Group, the Bicycle and Pedestrian Program, and potentially other groups within ITRE's interdisciplinary environment.
The Research Assistant will independently support and/or execute data collection and analyses. These activities may include survey development, monitoring, QA/QC, validation, and developing data visualization tools for a range of transportation research projects. The Research Assistant will independently support the coordination of other data collection staff which can include the development of data collection plans and schedules. The Research Assistant will contribute to research white papers, final reports, and presentations.
The results of the Research Assistant's actions and decisions will contribute to multiple research projects under the guidance of the principal investigator. Expected project assignments include the annual collection of statewide seat-belt use data, the validation/analysis of non-motorized volume data, the collection and analysis of annual statewide survey data, and the visualization of safety data.
The Research Assistant must be willing to travel for data collection and/or project meetings on an as-needed basis. Some travel (some overnight) is expected – approximately 10% of the time in a given year and may be day-long trips or multiple-day trips. Most travel opportunities will be in-state and can be as long as five or more days at a time. Individual must be willing to work in varying field conditions that may include inclement weather, uneven terrain, and summer heat.
Other work, duties, and/or responsibilities as assigned or required, pending project work and/or classroom teachings. Position requires a valid state driver's license.
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience, or substantative relevant independent experience and education. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills.
Intermediate to advanced proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access (or similar software).
Basic to intermediate proficiency with one or more of the following statistical software packages: SAS, JMP, Stata, R.
Basic to intermediate proficiency with one or more of the following visualization tools: ArcGIS, Tableau
Must demonstrate a basic understanding of the scientific method, research design, and statistical techniques.
Must possess good organizational skills and be detail oriented.
Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
Must be able to work independently as well as be part of a team.
Must be able to make presentations utilizing good communication and facilitation skills.
Must demonstrate a high level of initiative and ability to complete tasks across multiple projects.
Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Prefer individual with experience working as a member of research team(s).
Prefer individual with experience independently processing, validating, and analyzing data.
Prefer individual with a basic understanding of the scientific method, research design, and statistical techniques.
Required license or certification:
This position is required to travel to carry out the core functions of the position. Travel is often to rural areas where public transportation is not available.
A valid North Carolina driver's license will be required by date of employment and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
