Northwest Technical College is looking for an upbeat, positive, reliable custodian. The general function of this position is to perform a variety of janitorial, custodial and maintenance duties to provide a clean and safe environment at NTC, but staff may also be assigned to Bemidji State University, if needed.
Job offer is contingent on a successful criminal background check conducted through the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The incumbent must also possess a valid driver's license and be able to pass a driving history background check.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RESULTS
Perform general maintenance and cleaning to include, but not limited to, classrooms, labs, hallways, corridors, lobbies, entrances, lounges, restrooms, offices, supply rooms, storage rooms, public areas, mechanical rooms and other work areas at NTC. Perform detailed cleaning and maintenance on campus. Other duties include, vacuuming, dusting, scrubbing, cleaning rugs and upholstery, mopping, sweeping, stripping and waxing floors, changing light bulbs, emptying trash and recycle containers, maintain supplies of soap and paper products, washing walls and polishing other surfaces (woodwork, tables, counte1tops, fixtures, etc.), washing windows and monthly checks of fire extinguishers, defibrillators, fire blankets, first aid kits, safety supplies, emergency lights fixtures and eyewash / shower stations. Percent of Time: 55%
Maintains / troubleshoots serviceability of all equipment and tools by following general and/or manufacturer's operating and maintenance guidelines. Notify supervisory of need for replacement of equipment and supplies. Operate custodial equipment such as industrial sweepers and use a variety of cleaning and sanitizing agents in performing tasks as necessary. Check the operation of and make minor repairs to HVAC equipment, plumbing, electrical, lighting and doors/ window hardware. Work areas and cleaning equipment are to be inspected, kept safe, working and in well maintained condition on a daily basis. Any major repair needs are reported to the Facilities Services Supervisor. Percent of Time: 15%
Perform exterior general maintenance which includes, but are not limited to, routine grounds work to enhance the appearance of landscaping by planting, cutting, mowing, raking, seeding / sodding, hedging, trimming and watering. Operate machinery and vehicles in a safe manner and do daily safety checks, fluid checks and grease before use. The grounds are kept neat, clean, safe and in an aesthetically pleasing manor daily. Snow / ice are removed from sidewalks and entrances which should be hazard free. Percent of Time: 15%
Monitor building integrity and condition and perform general maintenance duties as necessary. Inform Facilities Service Supervisor of maintenance, equipment and supply needs. Percent of Time: 5%
Maintain proper labeling, dilution and understanding use of all chemicals and cleaning products. Wear personal protective equipment as necessary. Adhere to safety regulations to assure compliance with federal, state and local regulations and codes. Apply knowledge of applicable safety precautions and procedures. Secure work area as required. Percent of Time: 5%
Perform functions related to the operations of the department and the safety / security of the Northwest Technical College Campus. Duties include, but not limited to, securing all doors, windows and state vehicles, make sure no one is left in the building, comply with rules and regulations related to emergencies, set up rooms as requested in a timely manner, show up to work on time and assists with shipping / receiving of materials. Percent of Time: 5%
To facilitate proper crediting, please ensure that your application / resume clearly demonstrate fulfillment of the following minimum qualifications:
Knowledge of different types of flooring/floor covering sufficient to determine proper methods of maintenance and appropriate cleaning methods, materials, agents and equipment.
Knowledge of chemical cleaning agents such as ammonia, bleaches, scouring agents and soaps sufficient to appropriately select the agent(s) handle and apply, and dispose of safely or the ability to learn about them.
Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance sufficient to operate and use them effectively and make minor repairs.
Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.
Ability to perform assigned tasks with limited work direction.
Ability to keep simple records.
High school Diploma or GED
Six months or more of related experience
Boiler License - Any level
English sufficient to read and understand operational manuals
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Good client / customer service skills
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks
Ability to work effectively alone or in a team environment
Ability and knowledge to use a computer for e-mail and e-time sheets
Sensitivity to student and public needs and an ability to relate on many different levels to diverse student, faculty, administrative and community contacts is essential.
