The HR Business Partner position provides management of HR programs and processes for the Department of Medicine (DOM). These include employee relations, compensation, benefits (including leave management), employee development, employee recognition, employee engagement, and talent acquisition for all employee groups. Participate on HR management teams and in HR projects to research and develop strategic solutions both internal to the center and within the Medical School.
Job Duties and Responsibilities: Talent Acquisition - 50% Faculty & Staff Recruitment: • Provide advisement on all areas of assigned divisions’ recruitment (i.e. job classifications, compensation, job descriptions, etc.) • Facilitate recruitment activity from initial position request through posting a job opening, such as status updates, offer letters, signing bonuses, etc. • Consult and assist hiring managers on recruitment strategies and with screening/interviews, as needed • Provide salary recommendations for all staff hires - Civil Service/Labor Represented and Professional Academic/Administrative (P&A) employees • Responsible for drafting and managing the offer letter process; work in conjunction with the Division Administrator and Office of Faculty Affairs and Diversity (OFAD) for faculty hires • Assist with onboarding and off-boarding processes to ensure smooth transitions • Advise faculty and staff on benefits offerings including retirement savings, health, dental, life insurance, and disability.
Appointment Management and Compensation: • Administer the annual merit pay plan for Civil Service and Professional Academic/Administrative (P&A) employees • Analyze salaries within the department to ensure equity and that appropriate guidelines are followed • Partner with hiring managers and administrators for layoff requests and assist with compliance and documentation • Initiate, monitor, and track progress and completion of probationary performance appraisals • Responsible for managing and maintaining documentation and consultation regarding leaves of absence • Review job reclassifications and job evaluations within the department; submit and monitor the requests and outcomes • In collaboration with DOM Finance, facilitate faculty compensation initiatives (i.e. Quarterly Incentives, department equity, etc.) • Manage faculty and staff leaves to include medical, personal, single semester and phased retirements
HR Management & Administration - 40% Employee Relations: • Acts as the first point of contact for employees and supervisors seeking counsel on any employee relations matters and serves as an investigator as appropriate per situation • Provides coaching and feedback on performance management issues and assists with any problem-solving techniques or steps toward disciplinary action • Coordinates the implementation and development of updates to any policies and procedures at the local, state, or federal level, including UMN Office of Academic and Clinical Affairs, UMN Medical School, and Department of Medicine standards. • Provides guidance on interpreting and implementing team building strategies and employee engagement
Employee Development, Recognition, and Engagement • Collect and maintain data for annual and probationary review process • Lead assigned departments/divisions in the administration of HR services, such as promotions, transfers, performance evaluations, employee development and recognition programs/events. • Provide training to managers and staff on topics as needed • Partner with department leaders to interpret, present, and develop action plans around engagement data.
Other Duties as Assigned 10% • Assist with the transition and maintenance of files in Perceptive Content (electronic filing system) • Lead process improvement initiatives • Special projects, as necessary • Partner with DOM leadership and other operational units.

Required Qualifications: • BA/BS degree in Human Resources or related field with 2 years professional human resources experience, or related education and experience to equal 6 years. • Demonstrated expertise with Microsoft Office Suite or related software • Desire to work effectively in a collaborative and inclusive team-oriented environment • Experience working with all levels in an organization, including staff, faculty, and executive leadership • Ability to effectively read and interpret information, and manipulate and/or present data in a professional manner • Must have clear and effective communication skills, both written and oral, in a diverse workplace • Must be adept at problem-solving, including ability to identify issues and resolve in a timely manner • Possess meticulous organizational skills and attention to detail, including the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while adapting to new challenges
Preferred Qualifications: • Previous experience working in a healthcare and/or academic environment, preferably in a human resources capacity • Experience working with University of Minnesota policies, procedures, and systems (i.e. Google Applications, Perceptive Content, etc.) • Experience utilizing HRIS Systems (i.e. Workday, PeopleSoft, etc.) • Experience handling matters in a unionized environment, such as contract interpretation, negotiations, etc. • Familiarity with current HR trends and updated employment laws and regulations (i.e. FLSA, FMLA, ADA, etc.) • Experience conducting employee relations investigations • Advanced writing and proofreading skills to portray information professionally and grammatically-sound • Strong speaking and presentation facilitation abilities to relay information clearly and effectively • SHRM-CP/SHRM-CP, PHR/SPHR, or other comparable professional certifications • Lean Six Sigma certified or demonstrated process/continuous improvement knowledge-base
