Research Support - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The primary purpose of this position is to help the lab make progress toward its experimental goals. This work will focus on understanding the responses of the microbiome and isolated microbes to antimicrobial agents. Understanding how diverse forms of extracellular stress affect the microbiome will provide critical biological insight into the development of dysbiosis, disease, and antibiotic resistance and will lead to novel therapeutic methodologies. This work will rely on traditional microbiological techniques as well as recent advances in high-throughput DNA and RNA sequencing to studying the consequences of antimicrobial agents on these highly complex microbial communities. To achieve these goals the research assistant will provides technical assistance, coordinate laboratory research according to established laboratory protocols, and assist with training lab aids. In addition, the research assistant will manage laboratory purchasing and aid in the drafting of manuscripts/grants. To tackle the dual problem of antimicrobial resistance and microbiome disruption, we must develop a more complete understanding of how and why bacteria respond to and die from antibiotics in their natural environment. To develop this understanding, we employ multi-omic systems-biology approach to study host and environmental microbial communities. This approach combines high-throughput DNA and RNA sequencing, metabolomics, proteomics, and traditional microbiology techniques. Job Qualifications Education and Experience â¢ Education: Must have a Bachelorâ™s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry or related science. â¢ Technical: Must have basic knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in the areas of molecular biology and cell culture. Experience within the field of Microbiology preferred but not required. Must be willing to work with mildly infectious organisms. Writing is an integral part of the research process and as a result strong written communication skill are critical for success in this position. â¢ Or, equivalent combination of education and experience. Â
