Iowa State Research Farms in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Iowa State University (ISU) is seeking candidates for a Feed Mill Manager - Director I. The ISU Feed Mill and Grain Science Complex, a state-of-the-art facility, will focus on furthering the universityâs mission of teaching, research, service and extension while producing feeds for livestock and poultry teaching and research farms of Iowa State University. The priorities of the facility are to enhance ISU teaching programs related to feed technology, grain science and animal nutrition, provide programming opportunities for ISU Extension and Outreach, related to feed technology, grain science and animal nutrition training and continuing education, support ISU animal, feed and grain science research programs and to manufacture diets and feeds for CALS animal teaching and research facilities. The mill will have capacity of about 20,000 tons per year at about 10 tons per hour, however when ISU conducts classes, tours, short courses, research diets, internships, small batches and rations for seven distinct classes of livestock, the working capacity will be more like 6,000 to 10,000 tons per year.
The Feed Mill Manager will be responsible for developing and managing feed mill and grain storage budget, price adn bill all feeds, grain inputs and services, assess all user fees for feed mill use, market surplus feed and/or surplus mill capacity as appropriate, and manage all staffing needs including students. This position is responsible for coordinating communications and human interactions with the feed mill such as; overseeing safety programs for visitors, students, staff, feed and biosecurity, interacting with ISU faculty and staff regarding research diets, unique formulations, or ingredients, tours, grain science research, feed research, classes, hands-on laboratories, and extension/outreach short courses, maintain contacts in feed and grain industries, interact regularly with the feed mill advisory committee of ISU users, organize tours for visitors, donors, prospective students, and the public, and manage relationships within and external to ISU related to the feed mill. The Feed Mill Manager will be responsible for managing feed processing and production including; overseeing all operations of ISU Feed Mill and accompanying grain storage/drying, scheduling feed mill staff including full-time, part-time, and students, scheduling feed processing and procurement of grain and ingredients, overseeing feed processing, mixing, storage, ingredients, and grain storage to ensure accuracy and quality, maintaining inventory of all grain, feed ingredients, and complete feeds, and overseeing quality, biosecurity, and data acquisition programs/systems.
Additional responsibilities include; maintaining all feed mill facilities, bins, dryers, feed processing equipment, keys, buildings, machinery, scales, etc., scheduling and maintaining feed delivery vehicles, forklifts, etc.; and maintaining all required certifications related to feed manufacturing, safety, etc.
