Position Description

This electrical technician position is to provide support to the Core Controls Group for specification, construction and installation, integration and test of instrumentation, network, timing for the NSLS-II beamlines. Will also assist with other electrical technician tasks as needed by the Controls Program and the Photon Division.

The successful candidate will possess the ability to support the installation of industrial and scientific electrical equipment used in the x-ray beamline equipment of the Photon Division within the NSLS-II Project including network hardware, PLC instrumentation, motion control instrumentation, and laboratory instruments as needed. The work will include instrumentation wiring (<50V), and small signal wiring where low noise is essential.

Position Requirements

Qualifications Required:

• Technical Institute or Associate's degree in a related scientific or engineering field
• Minimum of eight (8) years' experience in instrumentation and industrial control systems
• Experience designing solutions for small to medium scale industrial process control systems, including PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), servo and/or stepper motor controllers, sensors for temperature, pressure, and position. Experience in the selection of the hardware and cables for these types of systems
• Extensive experience with fabrication, assembly, wiring, testing complex electrical systems, including ability to perform small-scale fabrication, prototyping, electrical component soldering. Ability to work from schematics, diagrams, written procedures, spreadsheets, controls interface documents
• Ability to perform work planning in preparation for machine maintenance and shutdown cycles
• Ability to interact with a diverse group of scientific and technical staff as well as external suppliers

Qualifications Preferred (one or more of the following):

• Previous experience working in a scientific facility
• Troubleshooting skills in digital and analog circuits, including usage of test and measurement equipment such as oscilloscope and signal generator
• Ability to generate and track hardware procurements
• PLC Programming experience
• Experience with testing and calibrating motion systems
• Ability to compose circuit and wiring diagrams
• Experience in creating and maintaining technical documentation, test records and inspection reports
• Ability to develop sub-system test strategies and system readiness procedures
