The College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a VeterinaryTechnician to provide intermediate-level nursing care in the small animal and exoticsservice.Position also rotates betweenhospital services to provide veterinary nursing coverage when the respectiveservice has an unusually large caseload or when the regular service technicianis absent. Makes patient assessments, performs triage, and prepares patientsfor exams or treatments. Position performs diagnostic tests, analyzes results,and records patients' medical histories and symptoms, includingobservations.Position administersmedicine and treatments, establishes plan of care, and operates medicalequipment.Incumbent serves as aresource of information and guidance. Position supports teaching efforts byinstructing students, interns, and residents.
Typical Duties andResponsibilities:
Provides intermediate-level patient care in exotics and avariety of other hospital services as needed. Administers drugs to patients andmonitors for adverse reactions. Calculates, checks, and adjusts drug dosages asneeded. Ensures patient is receiving correct medication. Monitors patients'vitals, mentation, pain score, fluid pumps, and any electronic monitoringdevices that may be attached to the patient (anesthetized, sedated, or awake),and records all information in patients' charts. Assesses problems that couldbecome detrimental to hospitalized patient's health, and notifies clinicians asneeded. Places IV catheters, urinary catheters, bandage materials, naso-gastrictubes etc. to allow for proper patient care. Orders lab tests as needed, orensures that proper test is ordered by students or other veterinary staff.Collects samples required for submission (blood, urine, aspirates, etc.) andsubmits samples to appropriate lab. Performs simple diagnostic tests not run bylabs (NOVA, PVC/TS, SNAP tests, etc.). Preps and positions patients forsurgical procedures. Preps equipment and supplies for non-surgical and minorsurgical procedures. Evaluates anesthesia candidates for potential risks andrelays information to anesthesia clinicians. Triages and stabilizes criticalpatients, and initiates CPR for patients as needed. Obtains radiographs andother diagnostic imaging. Restrains patients for physical exams.
Maintains communication with both UTCVM clients andnon-UTCVM owners, evaluates information provided, and relays pertinent info toappropriate clinicians as needed. Provides owners with updates on patients,including info on procedures, estimates for appointments/procedures, andupcoming appointment details. Logs all outside communications in computersystem. Takes prescription renewal requests from owners and outside pharmacies andobtains clinician approval as needed. Calls in prescriptions to outsidepharmacies. Obtains info/history from owners and referral clinics. Fills outand submits requests to other departments for anesthesia, radiology, labs, andservice consults. Coordinates with other services to ensure procedures,consults, and anesthesia are done correctly, safely, and in a timely manner.Screens ER calls and relays important info to clinicians. Advises owners overthe phone on best course of action if they believe they have an emergency.Provides info to owners about bringing their animals in through ER, obtainingreferrals from their primary veterinarians, and estimates for ER.
Supports teaching efforts by instructing students, interns,and residents. Ensures students are correctly performing tasks related topatient care/technical skills, and provides feedback for improvement. Teachesstudents proper methods for venipuncture, catheter placement, anesthesiamaintenance, etc. Guides students in correct methods of sample collection.Assists students with patient physical exams. Directs students in properhospital protocol and procedures.
