Essential Job Duties:
The primary purpose of this position is to maintain the four buildings, grounds, electrical systems, boiler, and mineral processing equipment. The current buildings are over seventy years old with constant maintenance needs.
The work schedule will mostly be in normal business hours. There will be times when irregular hours are needed to do outside contractor work schedules.
Currently, non-skilled efforts are attempted by technicians who have limited knowledge and time to perform proper work. The need for this Facility Maintenance Technician position is driven by the physical separation of the facility from the NC State campus in Raleigh.
This position is located in Asheville, North Carolina.
Regulations: Position is required to follow all local and state building codes as well as ensuring all electrical and mechanical work complies with OSHA and EPA regulations.
Physical Effort: Heavy lifting, climbing of scaffles and ladders, bending and tool usage is required. The work will be performed at local temperature extremes and the duration can be up to ten hours per day.
Work Environment: The facility processes fine minerals so the environment is dusty and dirty at times. Construction projects will subject the position to local weather. Work can be performed at heights so fall protection will be required. Welding and grinding will require appropriate eye and face protection. Electrical work will require proper insulation equipment such as gloves and mats.
Machines and Tools: Position will work with the following tools:
Small manual lathe
Small hand tools such as drills, hammers, wrenches, and etc.
Pressure and flow meters
Table and circular saws
Electrical hand tools
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Working knowledge of methods, practices, tools, and materials used in die general maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery.
Working knowledge of the methods, principles, practices, and techniques used to maintain compressors and heating systems.
Skilled in the use of acetylene and plasma welding, or similar, equipment.
Ability to award and manage contractors for small capital improvement projects.
Ability to perform preventative maintenance work on equipment and manage parts inventory.
A minimum of five years' experience in trade work is required.
High School Diploma and two-year degree in science or trades, or equivalent of military or industrial maintenance training.
Required license or certification:
A valid North Carolina Driver’s license is required.
