This position is a Full-time 10 month position as a chemistry laboratory coordinator and chemical hygiene officer. This involves teaching introductory chemistry lab sections, maintaining the chemical stockroom and chemical inventory, preparing for and breaking down laboratory experiments, coordinating laboratory adjunct instructors and working with undergraduate work study students. This position is scheduled to start August 2020.
Responsibilities (Include but are not limited to)
Teach up to two introductory undergraduate chemistry laboratory sections per semester.
Serve as chemical hygiene officer for the department including maintaining the chemical stockroom including the chemical inventory.
Preparation for and breakdown of laboratory experiments.
Coordinate the teaching responsibilities, grading and conduct of the adjunct laboratory instructors for each laboratory course to ensure equity and continuity of education between laboratory sections.
Coordinate work study students in the areas of laboratory and chemical safety, solution preparation and laboratory set-up in such a way the work study is a positive learning experience for the students.
Work with departmental faculty to establish course schedules
Evaluate adjunct laboratory faculty with respect to grading assignments fairly across several laboratory sections.
Objectively report problems to the department chair and work with adjunct faculty to remedy these problems.
Requires a B.S. (or higher) degree in chemistry or a closely related field.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in some or all of the following: laboratory teaching, laboratory safety, maintaining a chemical inventory, ordering chemicals, handling chemical waste and assuming a leadership role.
At least two years' experience in some or all of the following: teaching undergraduate laboratories, preparing for and breaking down experiments, working in a chemical stockroom and working with colleagues in a laboratory setting.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Ability to use Microsoft Word and Excel.
Ability to think in a creative and practical manner to improve the laboratory experience for students.
