Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine (CABM) is accepting applications for an Assistant Research Professor (Non-Tenure Track) position. Reporting to the Professor and Director of the Rutgers University Microbiome Program (RUMP), the Assistant Research Professor will be the Director of the Microbiome Core Laboratory (MCL), to both provide service for the Rutgers community and to conduct a broad range of microbiome studies, including studies related to human health, development and disease, as well as in plant, animal and environmental systems.
The successful candidate will:
Establish and run the MCL, being responsible for all aspects of its operations, as well as downstream bioinformatic analysis. This will involve facilitating and conducting research to obtain and integrate microbiomic, metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, and epigenomic microbial data with host metabolomic and transcriptomic data to study the relationships between perturbation of the microbiome and its effect on immune and metabolic functions. The MCL will serve a wide variety of clinical applications.
Must have the expertise and the technical skill sets to successfully conduct studies involving: 16S rRNA, sequencing, metagenomics, metabolomics, and studies of gene expression of individual genes.
Must have experience conducting Metagenomics studies involving standardization of extraction, sample preparation, and analysis.
Will be responsible for management of lab operations and overseeing the maintenance and upkeep of the instruments and laboratory facilities.
Will supervise technicians, undergraduate and graduate students to work together as a team, and provide training, guidance, and advice on experiment design, bench techniques, and data analysis as well as general laboratory practices and safety protocols.
Will write industry, foundation, and NIH research grant applications in conjunction with RUMP PI, but also independently.
Will be responsible for developing peer-reviewed journal publications and presenting results.
Will manage lab operations and oversee the maintenance and upkeep of the instruments and laboratory facilities. Also responsible for managing animal protocols and securing necessary IRB approval.
Will provide technical support and advice for internal and external collaborators.
The Assistant Research Professor is expected to have demonstrated expertise and experience in all aspects of microbiome sequencing research areas. Must be proficient in the use of Qiime 2 for data analysis; prior work in the development of Qiime and other analytical tools is a strong positive.
Please note this faculty position is grant funded and is contingent upon the continued availability of grant funds to support it.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a Ph.D. degree in a related field with at least 5 years of research experience related to the microbiome or related field. Background in evolutionary biology, ecology, and molecular biology preferred. In addition, this position requires excellent presentation skills, strong technical writing skills, and proficiency in using Qiime2 and parallel informatic platforms for data analysis. Ability to develop bioinformatic tools, and lead tool development projects, including computational pipelines, and build reference databases is critical. Ability to construct whole genome-wide analytical tools. An outstanding publication record, consistent with the candidate's training and experience is required. Must possess expertise and technical skills necessary to successfully conduct studies involving: 16S rRNA, sequencing, metagenomics, metabolomics, and studies of expression of individual genes.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong operational knowledge of bioinformatic platforms used in the analysis of microbiome and metagenomic data, as well as the ability to develop new software for analysis and pipelines is required.
