About the Opportunity: The Assistant Director serves as a member of the departmental management team and shares in the leadership, support, and assistance to residence hall staff. They will supervise 1-2 full-time Area Coordinators (exempt), 2-3 full-time Residence Directors (non-exempt), and up to 50-75 Resident Assistants (paraprofessional).
Lead, engage and motivate employees; actively support a positive culture on your team.
Provide an effective process for performance management and development that provides measurable goals, clear expectations and solid direction to each team member.
Provide frequent feedback, recognition and coaching to ensure high performance, professional growth and development. Plan for and support employees in career and professional development opportunities aligned with organization's needs.
Address unsatisfactory employee performance including developing, delivering and monitoring performance improvement plans.
Facilitate the resolution of employee conflicts.
Lead and guide employee/team to develop new skills, knowledge and abilities that will enhance their work and development
Plan, organize resources, assign and delegate activities and measure results to achieve organization's expectations.
Manage change by providing the needed structure and transparent environment. Coach employee/team through changes that impact their day to day work.
Assist employees in navigating business processes and resolving issues.
Administer and ensure compliance with university policies and procedures.
Review staffing needs including developing job descriptions and recruitment plans. Lead the selection and onboarding process.
Responsibilities: This position will be responsible for the recruitment, selection, training, and development of all Resident Assistants. This position designs and implements intentional learning opportunities for the Resident Assistant team, as well as Resident Assistant candidates. They do this through recruitment and selection processes, training, ongoing developmental opportunities, appraisals, and performance documentation processes. Additionally, this position facilitates departmental recognition for Resident Assistants through the annual End of Year Resident Assistant Banquet, Graduating Resident Assistant Reception, and other ongoing appreciation efforts.
The AD will assist in the development of departmental policy and decision-making functions for the achievement of departmental goals and objectives.
This position will work to clarify and resolve student/parent complaints with departmental policies, procedures, and directives.
The AD will assist residence hall staff with student development, violations of community standards, crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and mediation.
The AD will execute their assigned functional responsibilities using a curricular approach by creating learning outcomes, outcome-based strategies, and assessment.
The AD will support building staff's implementation of an educational development plan for residents in their assigned community
This person will be charged with coordination and implementation of departmental decisions and directives.
This successful candidate is expected to balance job demands with the need to collaborate with university and community colleagues to enhance the department and one's own professional development.
This staff member will participate in an on call duty rotation.
The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal background check.
Master's degree in student personnel, higher education administration, or related field.
Four to six years in residence hall administration, including experience as a live-in staff member.
Experience preferred in supervising professional residence hall staff.
Effective supervision, administrative, organization, written and oral communication skills.
Experience in conflict resolution, mediation, and application of student development theory in a residence hall setting.
Strong decision making skills.
Experience working autonomously and ability to exercise excellent judgment in outlined areas of responsibility
Experience and desire to work with and address the needs of a diverse student community.
Demonstrated organizational and leadership abilities.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Experience with computer applications and using social media platforms as a tool for developing community.
